Today’s BJJ technique video comes as a response to a Reddit questions I received recently from an AMA I did. The question was worded as “what are the secrets to S mount.” While I don’t have any secrets, I do have some fundamental tips that could help you with your S Mount in Brazilian Jiu-jitsu especially in regards to creating massive amounts of pressure on the person.
In this video I share a simple setup that you can use to establish an S Mount position. I also show an Armbar submission at the end and a sneaky trip to control both arms. I figure many of you are White and Blue Belts. So this setup is simple enough to use. That said, I still do this as a Black Belt.
Pay close attention to when I talk about the idea of the “Sweet Spot Of Pressure.” This focus revolutionized my ability to be heavy on top. Once you learn the feel it changes everything.
If you’re trying to work on your S mount position with your Brazilian Jiujitsu training then I hope this video is useful to you!
Thanks for watching!

If you’d ever like to train with the team and I. Check out my gym Derby City MMA in Louisville,KY.
Rob Biernacki demonstrates ‘FYJJ Kimura Sparring’, an important training method for developing any submission. Here you treat the submission as a hub position when you’re rolling, maintaining it, transitioning from it, and returning to it when you go off track. This training method is fully explained (with many more examples) in The Submission Formula which you can find out more about at https://www.grapplearts.com/submissionformula
The Single Leg RDL (Romanian Dead Lift) is one of the most beneficial exercises for many reasons.
It can help with balance, posterior chain activation and strength, back and leg health, and helps with guard passing for BJJ.
In this video we look at a basic “X-Pass” which has many similar movements and components as the Single Leg RDL.
Although this exercise has many benefits, can be difficult to perform properly. I use a modified approach using a PVC pipe which has been extremely beneficial in training and teaching this movement.
This technique has also been a great benefit in improving my balance, base, and stability with standing guard passing in Jiu-Jitsu.
*** I have just released my new warm-up that was created specifically for grapplers!

Presenting the 4 stretches every jiu jitsu players hips are craving. You might not know yours are, but trust us – they are.
Contrary to jiu jitsu, don’t go too hard when trying out these poses. Only go as far as it feels slightly uncomfortable, but no joints are breaking, no ligaments being torn. It will get easier with time and consistency.

As my friend Black Belt Seth Shamp told me once, “you don’t pass a Guard, you untangle it.”
This really helped me start to think of breaking down the weaknesses and holes in guards as well as focusing on patience when figuring out how to pass guard.
Here, I deal with a particular tough version of DLR where they’re gripping the arm on the foot post side. This makes a lot of the standard passes difficult.
The usual plan is to break that grip but sometimes that’s difficult. So, I came up with a different way to untangle and pass.
