In recent months, I have almost completely abandoned the traditional ankle lock leg configuration. Instead, I’ve been using the variation that you’ll see in this video with incredible success. So, of course, I’ve also been exploring different entries and this is one that I’ve pieced together from different inspirations.
Enjoy.

Our friend Laura asked about strategies from starting a roll from the knees in jiu-jitsu. The reality is, this position only exists in training, and it just a way of starting an open roll on the ground. We discuss some training strategies and the different types of sparring for specific skill development for BJJ.
We would love to hear from you. What do you normally do when starting from the knees?

It has been awhile! It’s good to be back. I’ve been slammed this past month. Enough about me let’s talk about this technique!
Being on someone’s back was easily my weakest position up until 3 years ago. A fresh blue belt could escape my back control. I just never really worked to take the back. I always liked mount and side control and tried to finish there.
I realized how bad I sucked at the position one day when my coach had us start on the back the entire class because everyone is switching to ebi rules. Everyone was escaping my control easily. I realized wow I’m terrible at this I really need to work on it. Not gonna lie I was pretty hard on myself. I spent the entire car ride home listening to I wanna get better.
After realizing this I started making it a goal to take everyone’s back and keep it. I studied how people were escaping and drilled in my head ways that I could prevent them from escaping. I started using these three things and I was able to stop most people from escaping my control. Listing to eye of the tiger helped me tremendously.
After that I realized man I’m pretty good at holding the back but now I can’t finish anyone… and that’s a technique for another day. Enjoy the video and I will talk to you next time!🤙🏻

In today’s BJJ Q&A question from Amy she says that feels like she learns more from my instructional videos than she does from her actual BJJ coaches. She has a 2nd part of her question which is about how to talk to her coach about questions she has. So in this video I cover both topics.
First I talk about how instructional videos are great and you can learn a lot from them (and why this is true) but I also talk about why a coach is necessary and how her Brazilian Jiujitsu coach made it possible to learn from the vidoes.
In the 2nd part of the question I talk about the role of coaches as problem solvers and some good ways to approach a BJJ coach with the right kind of questions to ask.
If you’re in a similar situation I hope this video helps!
