What’s up guys,
I’ve got a question from one of my Jiu-Jitsu email list Chew crew Subscribers named Matt who asked:
He was curious about catching and almost releasing when applying submissions and developing positions.
Catch & Almost Release is a concept I use to help level up my own chain submission attacks in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, and one that I have my students work too.
Matt was curious if I could give some specific examples to help clarify the point, so that’s what I’ll do.
If you train BJJ then you will probably find this idea helpful.
Thanks for watching.

So, today, we’ve got a question from Matt, a 4-stripe white belt and a big boy who says he prefers pressure passing.
He says he’s experiencing an obstacle though.
According to his coaches, he’s not using as much pressure as he could, and the main reason is that he’s worried about hurting his training partners.
He doesn’t use pressure, explosiveness, or dynamic movements because he’s the big guy in the room. He’s worried this makes him overly defensive, passive, and soft.
He asked what the best way was to change his thinking about going hard, upping the intensity, and lowering the injury risk while training Jiu-Jitsu as a bigger person.
I’ll give you guys a couple ideas to chew on when in relation to being a big guy doing Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu in a room full of smaller training partners.
Hopefully, you find them helpful.
Thanks for watching.

During my final match of the master 2/Feather division in 2010, eu estava nessa posição de “Shoud I stay or should I go”?”
Já viveu o cenário “Should I stay or should I go?” Compartilhe nos comentários ou no direct!

#tbt 2010 Imagine the score is 2-0 for your opponent, with 1’30” left in the match. You’re playing your A Game, but your opponent is very defensive, controlling the clock. He already has two penalties, and you have an advantage.
OPTION 1 – STAY Would you keep insisting on the same guard, trying to get at least an advantage point to win?
OPTION 2 – GO Or would you change tactics, do something different, switching to a plan B that fits the situation better?
If you’re an experienced competitor, you’ve lived through both scenarios. Think of a match where you stuck with your main game until the end and managed to win at the last moment. And another match where you stayed in your comfort zone, the opportunity didn’t come up, and afterward, you asked yourself, “Why didn’t I try something different?”
Many times, this is caused by mental mistake number 3: fear of making a mistake. To avoid this, step out of your comfort zone and trust your game. Sometimes it works, and when it does, it’s amazing!
And when it doesn’t, at least you avoid mental mistake number 4: dwelling on the outcome. You’re at peace with your decision.
Before the first 2012 @ibjjf Master Worlds, the @ibjjf International Masters & Seniors was the main event for masters in the Federation. During my final match in the master 2/Feather division in 2010, I found myself in this “Should I stay or should I go?” position.
I pulled guard poorly at the beginning, he scored 2-0, and he started playing very defensively, controlling the clock.
With 1’30” left, he had accumulated two penalties, and I needed at least an advantage to win, so I decided to step out of my comfort zone and changed my guard system.
In the video, you see me using a two-sleeve guard, then transitioning to a cross-sleeve guard.
The fear of making a mistake, like your opponent passing, happens mostly before and during the transition, so practice your transitions a lot to minimize or close any windows of opportunity for your opponent, depending on the guard you’re switching to.
In the end, stepping out of my comfort zone was worth it, and I won with a submission.
And you? Have you ever faced the “Should I stay or should I go?” scenario? Share in the comments or send me a DM!

Today’s question comes from “Bob”
He says that a year ago he opened up a new gym, and in the past year his BJJ gym has had a ton of cross-training/visitors.
The issue though, is that Bob hears a lot of trash talk about himself and his newer gym in his Jiu-Jitsu community.
Specifically, these insults are coming from other Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu gym owners and coaches. He asks whether or not I’ve dealt with something like this, and if so, how did I address it?
Hopefully, you find this video helpful Bob.

One of my favorite chokes in the gi is this modified Canto choke. This video is a clip from the seminar I just taught on bottom side submissions, reversals and much more.
Such a great experience to be part of the 10th Anniversary of @rogueowasso in Oklahoma this weekend. Grateful for the opportunity to teach a seminar and meet some amazing people at this event. Can’t wait to come back!

Ever locked in a triangle during a tournament and felt your legs burning out as your opponent resisted well?
If you’ve been there, you know how draining it can be!
Here’s a tip: if the wrist is available, keep the wrist lock in mind to save your legs, especially when they’re holding out strong. Don’t limit yourself to the triangle choke—think about mixing in Ezekiel, armbars, Kimura, and more. The more options you have, the better you’ll be able to adapt and conserve energy!

Recently I did a video where I talked about the curse of the lazy guard player, basically when someone only plays guard and they’re one dimensional.
I got a message from a Big Fella who says he has the opposite issue.
He says he’s a 6ft 2, 255lbs, heavyweight, with a good top game, emphasizing side control. The issue is he sucks on his back.
He wonders what the best types of guards are for bigger, less athletic heavyweights.
In this video I’ll give him 3 suggestions for guards I would recommend for my bigger, less flexible, students in BJJ.
Hopefully, you found this video helpful.
Thanks for watching.
