This is perhaps my most common way of tapping people from top half guard, as many people try to swim out of the Kimura as an escape – only to succumb to the Figure Four Arm Lock. It’s important to understand the direction to apply force, which is dictated by the direction the opponent’s elbow is pointing, and to establish a proper fulcrum by getting your elbow just behind their elbow (towards the tricep). A final trick here is to do a big bicep contraction, which will raise the fulcrum higher. This is helpful particularly on flexible opponents, as you will need to extend their arm much further.

If your opponent is making the standard Kimura difficult for you, the power move is to step over. From the Half guard, the step over Kimura is brutal, and is essentially a check mate position.

One of the big submission threats a top player can use against half guard is the Kimura. It isolates the guard players best defender, and the position itself is draining to be in once you go cross body and drop your weight on them.
There are some tweaks that need to be made to get the most out of this Kimura. In particular, we want to focus on bringing the opponent’s elbow to their ear, as we are limited in the amount of rotation we can perform and top pressure in half guard.

The Reverse Kimura can also be used from Top Half Guard. This is a position most people are used to conventional Kimuras, but not reverse Kimuras. By using the Reverse Kimura to literally trap his top arm, you remove his best attacker out of the equation.
There are some nice options here that I tease in this video, such as setting up a Darce Choke, going for a leg lock, or back stepping and then knee cutting back to the pass. My favorite is the leg lock, as his best defending arm is trapped and he really can’t do anything to prevent the leg lock setup from happening.

Some people call it cross side, side body or side control. It’s essentially all the same. It’s a pinning position with many different ways to pin the person flat on their back while using their weight and position to control and attack their opponent. It can be difficult to escape when your are flat but there are some easy escapes when your opponent tries to progress their position by going to the mount. These surprise escapes require proper timing to perform to when done right they are my favorite ways to escape.

Another great use of the reverse kimura grip is the sneaky arm drag. It’s probably your shortest arm drag, as the opponents arm is already crossed over, and their back is already halfway exposed. So the amount of distance you have to cover is really small making it easier than a standard arm drag.
What’s also great about this drag is that there’s no counter arm drag, as you are too low to be redragged. For the long limbed people, you can sometimes get a body triangle right off the arm drag. But if you’re shorter and stubbier like me, lol, then you need to do a proper back take by using the same footwork as you would with a technical standup to escape your hips.
