ADULT / BLACK-BELT / MALE / LIGHT – FINAL
If your opponent is clever, they will be able to circle with you when you try to reset the TV. The resulting scramble will be quite hilarious, as you both run circles around each other – but no progress will be made.
Instead, we will do something similar. We will still punch up like before, but this time we will pop the grip and then reach for their head. This gives the option of attacking with a D’Arce choke, which if done well can end the match right there. Otherwise, you will have regained top side control and be in command of the fight once again.

10th Planet Jiu Jitsu is known for many different things. Some people think of “the twister”, “the truck”, “the lockdown”, or even some of the deeper positions like “dead orchard”. This is a couple quick tips to help you properly lace the lockdown. You might also find a few details that help you better control the lockdown, increase your ability to move in the position, and even get a submission.

In today’s Q&A I answer a question from a White Belt with a strong wrestling base who is breaking the spirits of some of the higher belts in his gym.
He says he’s been training for over a year (mostly no gi) and came into BJJ with a strong wrestling background. During rolling he says he’s able to give many of the higher belts fits and, in some cases, beat some of them.
Well, he noticed that after beating some of the higher belts they seemed discouraged.
So his question is, should he keep doing what he’s doing or take it easy on them?
In the video I’ll address this question and lay out why taking it easy on them would not be a good idea.

If you don’t like what you are watching when stuck in the TV position, the reset button is your friend.
Simply put, we are going to reverse the position. We do this first by punching our arms up. This gets our elbow high and hands away from the mat, keeping us safe from a Kimura counter. We then circle towards their head as we look into them and tuck our chin in, preventing a pesky head scissors from catching our throat. Finally, we tuck our elbow into the mat that will switch our elbow position to be under theirs. That’s the secret – the person with the elbow underneath has the advantage, and you will then have the control of the TV position.

This is one of my favorite ways to take the back. Scratch that, it’s my favorite. 🙂
Why? Because it does not require speed, flexibility or strength. It’s all leverage, and can be done in a slow and controlled manner. I use the leg hook whenever I can, as it will shut down the spazzy fighters from being able to explode out of your TV position. Then, you can methodically work to the back using the butt roll.

I have short, thick legs, so triangle chokes are not a strong point in my game. But I do love the side triangle!
It is very simple to setup from the TV position, and once you have it locked up, it is very difficult to escape. I like to think of it like a front headlock, but using your legs instead of your arms. Plus, you have the Kimura controlling his other arm, so your opponent his no hands free to defend themselves with, and their legs are too far away to help.
We can finish the choke, a modified Kimura, or a wrist lock from the side triangle. Or, we can get to top position, which allows us to attack the choke, the Kimura, the figure four arm lock, or the spear of destiny, a viscous fist choke.
