Are older BJJ Black Belts really even Black Belts anymore? That’s the question I basically got asked today from several friends of mine who are BJJ Black Belts and who are also getting older.
This issue they’re running into is that as they’re getting older they’re getting beaten by many of the younger Purples Belts (and other belts) who are much younger than them and focused heavily in BJJ training.
So in the video I explain my thoughts on it and the struggle that many of us will go through if we were lucky enough to do Brazilian Jiu-jitsu when we were younger and then have the continued luck of doing it as we get older.

One of the most important knee exercises that you need to start doing today – Part 3
Shin Rotations are an integral part of knee health as your knee not only bends and straightens, but also has a rotational component.
It’s important to improve the rotational mobility, strengthen at the end-ranges, as well as strengthen throughout the available range of motion. Strengthening with this weeping movement is important for knee health and stability.
2 sets of 5-10 reps at a slow and controlled pace is a good place to start.

One of the most important knee exercises that you need to start doing today – Part 2
Shin Rotations are an integral part of knee health as your knee not only bends and straightens, but also has a rotational component.
It’s important to work the rotation but also strengthen at those end-ranges of motion. Injuries happen when your joint gets taken past its mobility and capacity to move so strengthening at end-ranges allows improved resiliency and can give you that bit of extra time to tap and save your knee.
Work on isometric resistance at end-ranges. Begin with shorter hold times and gradually increase hold times and the applied resistance. This must be done gradually and without pain.
2 sets of 5-10 second holds is a good place to start.

Shin Rotations are an integral part of knee health as your knee not only bends and straightens, but also has a rotational component.
If you think about it, many of the knee injuries we see in grappling are meniscus injuries which can occur through a rotational force on the foot or ankle which will cause a rotation on the knee.
Start with these shin rotations as a warm up or mobility training exercises.
2 sets of 5-10 second holds is a good place to start.

This cradle crucifix entry and control is really one of my favorite things, particularly for this submission sequence.
This was a random moment in a seminar I was teaching on guard passing, of all things at @billjiujitsu in Jacksonville, FL. Fantastic people and awesome place to train there.
My love of cradles started before I discovered people like @neilmelansonmma and @dpetrone_blackoutgrappling but seeing how they have weaponized the cradle really opened my eyes to so much more potential. Those guys are the ones to learn cradle magic from, and I would recommend @baret75 for all things crucifix related, because he is definitely a crucifix master. All that said, this is a setup I have used successfully, so I share it with others.

Ever wonder why you see “stars” if you are in a submission in BJJ or if you hit your head?

Going for the Kimura from bottom half guard can be a great attack sequence – when done properly and you have follow up attacks ready to go. I see commonly people get stuck with the Kimura not knowing what to do next, and end up getting beat up afterwards.
So I’m here to give you a very simple but effective attack sequence. The first step is to attack the Kimura, which we are going to assume failed. Step two is to go into a Knee Lever Sweep with a Kimura Grip.
This is very effective when your opponent has their full attention on the Kimura. Perhaps they are locking hands, or they are holding your hips with their free hand. That is the time to fire the Knee Lever.
You might be thinking, “Couldn’t he just post his free arm to stop the sweep?” Absolutely! That brings up our step 3 attack, which we will cover in our next video.
