Recently 1 of my smaller BJJ students was asking questions about how to add top pressure in Side Control. So, I gave them a few tips that helped them out and I figured I’d share them with you.
As a smaller person in Brazilian Jiu-jitsu you can certainly add top pressure. But you’ve got to me more deliberate than say a 300lbs person who can have sloppy positioning but still feel like a ton of bricks. And the video will give you some ideas on how to do that.
That said, all of the stuff that I talk about in the video is perfectly useable for a bigger person too. They’re sound fundamentals. But again, if you want to have strong pressure on top of side control and don’t want to get rolled, then they’re even more important if you’re not a massive person.
Hope the video is useful to you.

The front headlock is inherently a controlling position that possibly even turn into a submission opportunity. Knowing how to defend and counter this hold is crucial in grappling of all styles. This video shows some important considerations for escaping a variety of front headlocks and guillotine types. Hope this is helpful!

The Double Leg is the first take down you will learn in wrestling, so it’s no surprise that we see just about everyone shot doubles. Just like the single leg, you can also Kimura Trap them from the Double.
In this first version, we are going to stop the shot, then go into a guard Kimura. We will have some starting momentum, so we should get into a nice deep Kimura off the drop.
Our opponent can use this momentum to try to roll out, and if they do, we can follow them to the TV position or take a top same side Kimura.
