When it comes to side control escapes, I have recently shifted my mindset. Instead of approaching the task tactics (with more and better techniques), I now focus on the strategic goal of getting on my side then reinforcing that structure.
It aligns with a mantra I have had for a long time which is: the space I create must be mine to keep. And if I can be successful in achieving that goal of getting on my side with a strong structure, escape becomes almost effortless.
Case in point:

The arm crunch, or ude gatame if you like the Japanese words, is an extremely useful, quick and deceptive submission in its own right. However, it can also be used to set up great opportunities for sweeps and transitions to other submissions, as well. In this video, I show the fundamental mechanics of the arm crunch, as well as using it for the following purposes:
– Hiza Gatame from Butterfly Guard
– Triangle Choke (Sankaku Jime) Transition
– Sumi Gaeshi Sweep from Butterfly
– Heel Hook from Backside 50/50 Set Up
– Application from Kesa Gatame

I recently got a good question about how to develop the “If this, then that’ mentality and approach that many high level BJJ practitioners have with their styles. So, in the video I’ll give you some ideas to chew on about how to develop your own style and reach a relative level of competence or mastery with the positions or techniques in that style.
The ideas are very simple. But simple doesn’t mean they don’t work. After 23 years of grappling, it’s usually the simplest stuff that makes the biggest difference.
So hopefully if you have this kind of question for your Brazilian Jiu-jitsu then I hope this video is useful to you!

I got the chance to spend some time in sunny Playa Del Carmen, Mexico, doing commentary for not one, but TWO amazing Jiu Jitsu events! Both of them were featured on UFC Fight Pass, and I gotta say, it was such a thrill to be a part of them. The first event was Medusa, an all-female tournament that showcased some serious talent, and the second was CJJ Worlds (Combat Jiu Jitsu Worlds) – an intense, action-packed event with fighters giving their all on the mats. On a personal note, I couldn’t be more proud of my student, Kiaya Jackson @KiayaJ
She finished in 2nd place, and man, did she put on a show! It’s always rewarding to see my students succeed and demonstrate their skills on the world stage.
You know, I’m just feeling incredibly grateful right now. I’m so lucky to be able to travel the world, commentate on jiu jitsu events, and work in an industry that I’m truly passionate about. It’s pretty much a dream come true! And speaking of dreams, can we talk about the insane growth of jiu jitsu in the last few years? It’s seriously mind-blowing how far the sport has come, and I’m just stoked to be a part of it all.
