Today we have a question from “Bob” who sends a message to me saying that they’ve been practicing BJJ for 2.5 years, has competed several times, and has won his first round match every single time. Buth there’s an issue…
Every time Bob has competed, they have lost their second-round match.
They feel exhausted and worn out after every first-round match at Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu tournaments and can’t wrap their mind around WHY this keeps happening to them.
They say that they can roll all day in the practice room, but get extremely exhausted in actual competition.
Bob asks me how he can prevent this exhaustion and burn out from happening at tournaments.
Here’s what I think.

Today I got a question from someone who has been doing Japanese Jiu-Jitsu for 15 years, holds an instructor rank, and teaches that a bit. He has also been doing BJJ for well over a year.
He says he’s been in the BJJ gym for about 18 months and can hold his own against white belts, blue belts, and even stay alive against purple belts. He’s even placed at Blue Belt tournaments in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu.
His worry is that he has received no stripes on his white belt, even though he’s seen all the success listed above.
He wonders what I think and how he should talk to his BJJ coach about the subject of stripe and/or belt promotions.
If you’re having a similar situation, then I hope the video is helpful to you!

Often times people feel extremely overwhelmed when they train BJJ.
This is usually a result of the abundance of techniques in the martial art.
With that said, when you start training Brazilian Jiu-jitsu it’s sometimes difficult to understand exactly what you should be focused on. I mean, there’s such a wide variety of skills in the art.
In this video I give Daniella, a 1-stripe white belt who’s feeling overwhelmed with BJJ techniques, a few strategies I use to prevent those overwhelming feelings.
Thanks for watching!

Recently I was asked what it means to survive as a White Belt in BJJ. The question comes from a new White Belt who hears “you need to survive” all the time in his Brazilian Jiu-jitsu classes.
So I answer the question and talk about the idea of surviving during practice with skill and technique but also surviving through the rough part of learning a new skill.
Learning a new skill is tough, it’s never easy, and I explain 1 of the mental road blocks that happens with people and how to work through it.
Hope the ideas in the video are helpful!

Being Able to set up closed guard is extremely useful for beginners because the first techniques you are often taught are attacks from closed guard, but when you start actually sparring it is very difficult to get to. So this video I go through my 3 favorite methods for setting up the position.

Today’s BJJ video comes from a situation I was talking about with 1 of my students recently. It’s a simple idea of making what I call a “tactical retreat” to a lesser position. In the video I explain this idea and how many BJJ White Belts or lower belts (although some higher belts do it too), try and hang onto a dominant position too long. Even after the main points of control have been lost.
This leads to a situation where the opponent is then able to potentially gain the upper hand. I personally made this mistake a ton early on in my Brazilian Jiu-jitsu training and competitions.
So, in the video I’ll show some general ideas on this strategy from mount, back mount and side control.
Hopefully it’s useful to you!

Grip fighting in BJJ can be overwhelming at 1st. There are lots of grips and knowing which ones to fight for can be difficult. In today’s video I have a question about this exact thing from a White Belt.
He says that when he’s training Jiu-jitsu in the gi he feels lost on which grips he should be fighting for. So in this video I share a simple idea that you can implement into your Brazilian Jiu-jitsu to make grip fighting simple.
This is my personal strategy on fighting for grips and when I lay it out, you’ll probably think of it as maybe too simple. But sit back and watch some of the best guys out there and notice that they don’t grip up casually. They grip up with intention for something very specific.
Practice this and you’ll experience a much higher success rate with your techniques, and you’ll never feel lost by which grips you should go for.

Why do I smash my White Belt BJJ students? I got this question recently in response to 1 of my videos where I talked about smashing people from time to time. I read the question in the video and then answer it with my perspective as to why I smash my less experienced students and why it’s very helpful to them long term.
I compare the experience with my new experiences of horse riding which share a lot of similarities to my days as a BJJ White Belt.
Hope the video gives more perspective to the ideas.

In this video, I answer a question from Shawn about when you should do your first BJJ competition.
There are multiple factors to think about, and the decision can be different depending on your circumstances. I try to provide some tips and ideas that I feel would have helped me with preparing and going into my first competition.

In today’s video I answer a question from Josh who is an adult Green Belt in Brazilian Jiu-jitsu. Now some of you may be a little confused since Green Belts in Jiu-jitsu are usually saved for teenagers and kids (which I’ll explain).
But with that, he’s getting ready for a BJJ competition, and he wants to know what to compete since there are no adult Green Belt divisions.
So in this video I share some ideas from my own experience as a former adult Green Belt back in 2004 when I was a newer student in BJJ.
I also tell a story about a stinky white belt. Not a person white belt. . . my actual belt.
Enjoy the video and thanks for watching.

One tip for BJJ white belts (or any belt level) to accelerate your BJJ progress.
In today’s video I answer a question from a White Belt about a situation that I think happens with just about every BJJ White Belt when they roll with higher belts or coaches.
When you watch the video think back to whether or not you had this experience early on in your Brazilian Jiu-jitsu training. And if you’re a newer practitioner then think about whether or not it still happens.
And if it does happen then I hope the idea with mindset helps you overcome the obstacle I talk about in the video.

Ever struggle with remembering Brazilian Jiu-jitsu techniques? If you’re like most of us, then I’m sure you have. Especially early on. And this is the main topic for today’s question that comes from Sarah who’s a White Belt and can’t seem to remember all the techniques from her BJJ Classes.
So, in the video I share some ideas on why not being able to retain each technique you learn is normal and why it’s not even necessary for being good at BJJ. Sure, overtime you’ll remember more and more of them. But it’s not like forgetting a couple of techniques you don’t use will break your ability to be a good BJJ practitioner. In particular I share a story from my high school wrestling days that illustrates why, and why I never got too worried when I didn’t remember each technique when I was coming up.
Hope the video is useful to you!
