Today we will discuss the neck & arm principle for finishing submissions in Jiu-Jitsu.
I’ll cover subs from side control, from the guard,
All these situations come off of dilemmas. Meaning, I’ll use one submission threat to open up the other.
You can use this great principle with most submissions in Jiu-Jitsu or MMA.
Any position that involves submissions from the arm & the neck can utilize this principle.

Today I’m answering a question from Eric, a viewer, who is getting to the Von Flue Choke in BJJ but is struggling to finish the submission.
He says he has the position, he’s squeezing really tight, but for whatever reason he cannot finish it, hence why he sends me the message.
The Von Flue Choke is a sneaky counter to the Guillotine and Is a great technique to learn if you train Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, or even MMA.
The problem Eric is having with this technique is pretty normal though, so I’ll attempt to show you a different way to finish the submission without using so much muscle.
Instead, we will focus on utilizing body weight and positioning to get a proper finish.
Hopefully you found this video helpful, especially if you were having a similar problem finishing the choke.

Today’s video is going to feature Austin (IG: @badboymedicine) again!
Instead of focusing on takedowns for Jiu-Jitsu, this time we’re going to focus on what to do once we actually get on the ground, specifically with a focus on submissions once we get to the Half Guard position in BJJ or MMA.
We will explore a sequence from half guard in order to pass, pin, and submit your opponent off their back, with a specific focus on No-Gi grappling (of course most of this can be modified for the Gi too.)
Austin, a Judoka, asked specifically for submission sequences that come after a pin, so that’s what the focus on this video is going to cover.
We will also cover getting to mount, controlling the mount position, and submitting from there. This will include me teaching Austin some nuances such as passing from quarter mount, forcing my opponents to post on my knee to give up their arm, securing mount, and more.
It’s always fun seeing grapplers from different arts trying BJJ, so I hope you guys enjoyed this video as much as I did.
Hopefully, if you were struggling with the positions in this video, then you also found some useful tips that’ll help your game out too.
Thanks for watching!

Today our question comes in from a White Belt on Instagram who wants to be more offensive.
He says that he gets stuck on the bottom playing defense, like most White Belts in BJJ do, and just wants to be more offensive.
He asks how I think he can work on his ability to submit from the back and create some reliable offensive.
I send him back a message and ask him what his go-to defensive strategy is, his go to techniques off of his back.
He replies that he doesn’t really have any go-to’s and doesn’t want to focus on his “go-to” control and defensive techniques, he just wants to score more submissions.
In this video I’ll tell you why it’s more important to focus on developing solid control, guard retention, and defense on bottom, before you can develop a reliable offense, both on bottom and on top.
You have to be able to defend yourself. You have to be able to survive first. You have to be able to play off of your back in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu.
One of the things that made my top game better (subs and guard passing) was my ability to play off my back, defend guard passes, sweeps, etc.
And this is coming from a guy with a background in Wrestling (so it was uncomfortable for me too, at first!).
Hopefully some of you guys found this video helpful, especially if you were struggling with a similar issue as today’s messenger.

Is the Punch Choke a submission you should use in training?
The D’Arce Choke (also known as the ‘No Gi Brabo Choke’) is a great submission to tap your opponent out when you’re in his half guard and he’s trying to take your back. In this short video BJJ blackbelt Stephan Kesting shows you the 7 steps to a better D’Arce submission. Download Stephan’s BJJ Position Checklist for free at https://www.grapplearts.com/book.
This technique looks crazy, but is actually related to a very functional (although flashy) move from the sitting on shoulder position that is one of the hub positions of the Omoplata attack system.
