Get The Choke From The Back – When They Duck The Chin!

How often do we get into great back control and then we move into finish off the rear naked choke…when your opponent ducks their chin in hard toward their chest. Making it very difficult to finish. At least difficult to finishing without choking through the jaw. Which we want to avoid to our training partners on the mat. They are our buddies after all! But of course, there are some great ways to get that choke which you can employ on the mat and equally in a competitive environment. I discuss a few of these techniques in this video. Mounted Triangle – The Easy Way!

I love the mounted triangle. And so do my students. It is a very dominant position. Some people think that there are limited options from the mount. But this is untrue. And if you think about it, mount and guard are pretty much the same position. Just with a change of direction of gravity. So, everything you do from guard, you should be able to do from mount as well. And one of the most popular submissions from guard is of course – The Triangle. It should be no different from mount. BackSweep Into An Armbar!

The back sweep is very effective at getting your opponent to the ground. But once they are on the ground the battle of speed and position begins. If your partner places his elbow or hand to the ground and stiff arms you right in the chest. Guess what? you are going to struggle to move. But you might remember a recent video on how to deal with stiff arms. This is very similar. You are going to change shape and use that stiff arm against him. That’s defensive weapon he has just deployed. Can be used for an offense. For an armbar! Give this one a try guys. You will love it. Let me know how you go…

A Darce And Anaconda Drill!

Reverse Triangle From Spider Guard!

Now for another submission from spider guard. There are just so many! This one is a little tricky but to be honest, when you get the hang of it, you will feel that it is just as easy as a regular triangle. This submission is, of course, the ‘reverse’ triangle. A little tricker to get and to complete to submission but totally doable. And guess what guys, no one is going to expect you to do this…just practice it and make it your move. The Awesome D'arce Choke – One Of My Favourites!

Have You Used The Baby Spider? You Should

This might be new for some of you guys. It’s not overly advanced. In fact it is probably the first guard that you should think about studying and employing outside of closed guard. It is very powerful, opens up lots of submission avenues and in general. Worst case scenario, you end back in baby spider. Love this technique. Love this position. I know you will too. How To Escape The Straight Footlock

Are you a footlock guy? or do you just hope that you don’t encounter them? and if you do, your plan is to just tap. Not the best strategy. And pretty bad if you enter a comp. A much better approach is to study the footlock, practice them and get good at doing and defending. In this video, I cover a very simple straight footlock defense. This really is a powerful submission – the Kesa Gatame – With Americana Submission. Getting into it is a lot easier than you might think and it uses your opponents natural ‘bias’ (to get an underhook), with a little bit of timing. This feeds into the Kesa Gatame. Of course, when someone has you in a great Kesa or headlock control. What do many (particularly beginners) do? they push away, this provides the opening for this rather cool and extremely powerful submission. Go easy on this one guys. You can do some damage real quick before your opponent has time to tap. Give it a try on the mat (carefully) and let me know how it goes…
