Today I’ve got a question from a White Belt named Andy who has been hearing that the Keylock is not an effective submission for Jiu-Jitsu, especially at the higher belts.
So, he was wondering if the Keylock, or sometimes called the Americana, is even worth doing and if I could give him a couple of tips to improve his catching & finishing rate, cause he’s having trouble hitting it in his Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Gym.
This submission was actually one of my favorite submissions as a BJJ White Belt and as I got more experience it became something more like a sneaky threat or a set up for other submissions or positions.
Regardless it’s still a very useful tool and I’ll give you guys 3 tips to make you key lock stronger, both as a White Belt or an experienced Jiu-Jitsu practitioner.
Hopefully if you were struggling to finish this submission or just found Jiu-Jitsu, then you found this helpful.
Thanks for watching!

It’s important to have a healthy mindset in your training as you get older. Set realistic goals for yourself and achieve them to keep yourself safe and motivated.
Today’s video we’ve got a question from “hitanddip”, from a recent YouTube Videos comment section, asking:
“I want to ask; how do you get better at going on Attack Mode as a Beginner (in Jiu-Jitsu)”
This is a great question!
This is often a question many beginners will have. Especially since all of us will come into the gym, and at first, spend most of the time balling up, trying not to get submitted.
At some point in your BJJ training journey, you will get pretty good at not getting submitted.
Once you get to that point, you’ll start asking yourself how you can start adding some offense on your own, instead of just surviving in the rounds against the upper belts.
So, once you get to this point, how do you start adding offense into your game?
In this video I’ll give my perspective and give you guys a couple of ideal solutions to this common beginner issue – including developing you BJJ “GPS”.
If you were going through something similar, hopefully you find the ideas in the video helpful for you.

Today’s video is a short Q&A video from Origin’s BJJ Immersion Camp in Maine. During the sessions this week I got a chance to speak with hundreds of Brazilian Jiu-jitsu practitioners who watch the videos, listen to the podcasts and so on. If you’re one of them, it was cool meeting you!
A couple of blue belts came up to me asking questions about their grips burning out and getting tunnel vision during their rolling. After listening to their situation, I gave them some simple advice. Something that helped me with my BJJ.
Now the advice is very simple and can be applied by anyone from white belt to black belt. But it doesn’t make it easy! Like anything else in BJJ, you have to put things into action with practice.
So, if you struggle with your grips burning out during BJJ competitions and rolling, then I hope the video helps.

The omoplata from closed guard is one of the first setups you should master if you’re starting to add omoplata attacks to your game. From https://www.grapplears.com/omoplata, Omoplata 2.0 by
Stephan Kesting and Grapplearts.
In today’s video I answer a recent question about breaking the closed guard in BJJ (Gi or No-GI), WITHOUT getting swept in the process.
In Brazilian Jiu-jitsu, the Closed Guard is one of the most dangerous positions to be stuck in. It’s also a great position for your opponent to sweep or submit you if you’re not careful.
Therefore, it’s important to try and approach it with caution and technique when breaking it.
This Guard Break is both beginner friendly and extremely effective (in my experience) and hopefully a useful idea for you to practice next time you’re in training.
I hope this helps.

Grip fighting in BJJ can be overwhelming at 1st. There are lots of grips and knowing which ones to fight for can be difficult. In today’s video I have a question about this exact thing from a White Belt.
He says that when he’s training Jiu-jitsu in the gi he feels lost on which grips he should be fighting for. So in this video I share a simple idea that you can implement into your Brazilian Jiu-jitsu to make grip fighting simple.
This is my personal strategy on fighting for grips and when I lay it out, you’ll probably think of it as maybe too simple. But sit back and watch some of the best guys out there and notice that they don’t grip up casually. They grip up with intention for something very specific.
Practice this and you’ll experience a much higher success rate with your techniques, and you’ll never feel lost by which grips you should go for.
