Recently I had 2018 IBJJF World Champ Mahamed Aly out to our gym to train and do some videos.
Along with all the Brazilian Jiu-jitsu training we did at my gym Derby City MMA.
We also got together for some weight lifting.
Since we both had finished a Brazilian Jiujitsu session. We didn’t go very heavy.
Instead we were doing some technique work on Olympic Weight Lifting. Namely the Snatch.
And afterwards we did a bunch of ab exercises. This part wasn’t really planned.
You really get a sense of what kind of freak athlete Mahamed is when you see a 230lbs man moving around on the rings and bars.
It was impressive.
During the Olympic lifting portion we were guided by my buddy Joe who is the head coach for our Strength and Conditioning program along with his coach Joe who is big into olympic lifting.
Joe also works for Uesaka barbell.

In 2007 I came to Derby City MMA. I left my previous BJJ gym and began training here.
When I started training here I met this young kid named Chad. I didn’t know it at the time but he would radically change my life.
Initially he was a young kid growing up in a Brazilian Jiu-jitsu gym. Training and competing constantly.
But he quickly grew into a young man that was possessed with gifts that many of us wish we had. Both as a competitor and practitioner and as a teacher.
During our time training together we sharpened each other’s abilities. And on top of that. I learned a lot about myself.
While doing my best to try and help Chad along his own path I learned so much about myself.
This isn’t goodbye as we will see him often enough. But it is definitely a new period. For myself as a coach and for Chad as a man carving his own path in the world.
I love my “little brother” that I promoted 2 years ago. But I’m happy he’s growing. On and off the mats.
He’s taking his own call to adventure. Finding his own path in his life.

Yesterday I had the pleasure of promoting my good friend Adam to Black Belt in BJJ.
As a Brazilian Jiu-jitsu coach, I desperately hope I’m not only helping make my students better at BJJ. But I also hope that I’m making a positive impact on their life in some way outside of the gym.
Everyone has their mission and that’s mine.
When Adam gave his Black Belt speech about what it means to be a BJJ Black Belt at least to him, I was moved. Because of the way he felt for me and all of the other people on the team.
You’ll see it on my face, I became watery eyed.
For me, that lets me now I’m on the right track.
In regards to Adam himself. There is so much I could say about him.
In fact, it’s difficult to condense your feelings and memories down to a simple post.
So I won’t try today.
Instead, I’ll just say that I’m proud of Adam, and I am so very thankful that he found his way to our gym 9 years ago.
He’s been one of my best training partners, someone I look forward to seeing on a regular basis and we’ve had some fun times together.
Congratulations to Adam! I’m proud of him. As a coach, brother in arms and friend.
