This is a new guard position I have been developing over the last year, I call it The Vice. It is a position I stumbled across while trying an old school lasso inverted triangle attack, I stumbled across this control that locks your opponents hand under your leg allowing you to force a triangle/armbar and many other attacks ( Crab Ride, Berimbolo, Ankle Lock, Wrist Lock, Guard Passes, Crucifix, Omoplata) also it is very difficult to get out of. In addition it also is very hard to escape by falling back to your guard which gives the added benefit of making it off set the constant sweep battle that happens in competition. I have been testing it on many high level competitors coming through the gym the last year and it has been working great so far. I’m going to be getting back to competition soon and hope to get some great footage with me and my students in competition using it. I’m also excited to see the positions you all create since it’s a new position it will be fast evolving. Let me know if you have any questions or thoughts and please try to use it in class your self and post videos of it and tag @JonThomasBJJ #TheViceGuard #TheVice

This guard pass for the 5050 position is one of my favorite ways of dealing with the position. The 5050 is a very complex position with a lot of variations this in my opinion one of the easiest pass variations for the position. Focus on the strong knee inward position prevents most of their back attacks and the collar grip is strong for keeping balance and preventing the invert. In addition this pass series works well even when they have the lapel fed which is often a common problem when trying to pass.

This video me and Lucas Galbusera discuss a great attack series from the de la riva when you off balance your opponent backwards for a traditional berimbolo set up. A lot of people don’t like the inversion part of doing berimbolos, this technique allows you to benefit from having the strong backwards off balance in your de la riva series but instead using a great sweep and pass sequence to finish instead of performing the full berimbolo. The focus of this was getting from the Crab Ride to Twister Hook. Since it was Black and Brown Belts we got to the Crab Ride via advanced back takes
I have been using the Cross Guard since purple belt and it has always been in my opinion one of the most dynamic guards. It opens up options for both submissions and sweeps. Allows for triangle chokes, armbars, omoplatas, ankle locks, matrix set ups, berimbolo set ups, and transitions to X Guard. I think it is easy to set up for beginners from closed guard as well as accessible in many situation even at a top level. This clip is my giving a short overview of the position from my classes teaching at the Nacka Summer Camp in Stockholm Sweden. If you like the position I have more instructional content on the grapplers guide.

If inverting is an art form… then the Berimbolo is the Picasso of the BJJ world. Funky, uber technical, with a lot of key details… and ultimately very satisfying when done right. Check out the video below to see Atos black belt Michael Liera Jr. show an awesome variation of the Berimbolo, in which he re-rolls to take the back!
