In class recently I was teaching what my BJJ students and I jokingly call the Spoon Choke. Which is just a rear naked choke that ends in the “spoon” position you might be in with a your significant other. And one of my White Belts asked a good question. Is position before submission a myth?
She asked this because the position we were attacking from is not part of the Big 3 most commonly awarded points in competition and focused on during training. These Brazilian Jiu-jitsu positions being Mount, Back Mount and Side Control with Knee On Belly being used as well.
I told her that position before submission is not a myth. Our ability to dominate position gives us the ability to control our opponents effectively and setup a submission with predictable effectiveness.
That said, there are submissions everywhere in Brazilian Jiujitsu and they don’t happen only after you gain dominant position.
In fact, for me one of the things I’ve found that has been helpful for back mount is by attacking the submission early, even before I establish the hooks and everything.
I still have dominant position even if it’s not the normal positions we are accustomed to.
By doing this I catch the person off guard while they’re fighting for position and I am able to secure the submission.
Check out the idea and maybe it will be useful to you.

When I compete in BJJ tournaments and competitions I’m not really focused on getting the gold medal. Do I want to win my matches? Of course, but I’ve found that when my mindset is fixated on winning or losing, or getting the gold medal, I lose sight of what I have to do to win. Which is COMPETE and use my Brazilian Jiu-jitsu game to the best of it’s abilities.
I bring this up because our friend who is a new Blue Belt send a question in about losing the gold medal/winning mindset.
Basically, he took 2nd place as a White Belt and ever since then he’s been itching to get back after it and have a chance at winning a gold medal. So in pursuit of this goal he’s been training his butt off.
And with only 6 weeks prior to his competition his coach decided to promote him. Now, this would be a great thing, but now he’s worried about competing at a higher level.
He said that he’s lost the “I’m gonna go for the win and the gold medal” to “I’m just going to survive.”
Now we all want to win our matches in Brazilian Jiujitsu tournaments. It goes without saying.
But in this video I’ll explain why I personally don’t like to compete with a fixation on winning.
Hopefully it’s help with your mindset in BJJ competitions.

Would you like a couple of extra submissions from the Turtle position? Cool, well that’s what I break down in this BJJ technique video. In the video I show 2 chokes that can be done from the Turtle position in Brazilian Jiu-jitsu.
This question comes from our friend Pauline who trains BJJ up in Canada and is wanting to get a couple of extra attacks from the position.
In this video I show two of my favorite “go to” chokes from Turtle. The 1st is a basic rear naked choke style submission.
I’ll do this one anytime I see or feel the chin raise up away from the chest.
If the chin doesn’t raise up much then I move to the other submission option which is a Guillotine Choke. This submission can be used for the submission itself or it will cause the person to roll away to avoid it.
Check out the submissions and I hope they help you out! Thanks again to Pauline for the question.

In this video I show my favorite BJJ submission chain from Side Control I used as a White Belt in Jiu-jitsu rolling and competitions. Truth be told, I still use elements of it even now as a Black Belt. Just illustrating the fact that good sound fundamentals moves never become truly obsolete. So you don’t have to be a White Belt to use this submission series.
I originally learned this submission chain series from an old Brazilian Jiu-jitsu DVD series and would practice it with my roommate who was also involved with training.
It’s a pretty simple sequence. First it starts from Side Control with the Kimura and transitioning to North South. After that I use an Armbar if the Kimura isn’t successful or doesn’t feel right. Finally if all of those options fail I go for Back Mount.
If you know me, you know I love taking the back! And this is one of the first transitions I used that helped create this love for back taking.
So whether or not you’re a BJJ White Belt. I hope you enjoy the submission chain shown in this video and I hope it’s useful to you.

Here is a simple gi hack to keep your pants on! (And how I tie my belt)
Sometimes it’s good to have the break in between to tie your gi up. But in tournaments sometimes it can be a hassle if you are winning and have to stop to tie your pants.

Over the years as a head coach and co-owner of a BJJ/MMA gym I’ve learned that. . .
People are cray-zee.
Either that or they watch too many movies.
Like, last Friday I had this guy who wanted to live in the gym and train with me.
He’s planning on going to the UFC and being the champion. Ignoring the fact that he’s in his mid 30s and has never trained before.
Then yesterday I got an email from a person who had requested information about our gym.
After sending him the info, here’s his reply. .
———
“Laugh out loud. I am trained to be a prize fighter. I do not need orders.
I need amateur fights immediately at 170lbs, and an avenue to quickly go pro at 155lbs. I am 70″ tall, 185lbs, 75″ reach. 11-0 Bjj with one blue belt state title and one blue belt NAGA title. Pure Muay Thai striking (like a actual thai fighter, not this bullshit on tv).
As Connor Mcgregor once said, “I fight at 155 because I have the greatest advantage, without an advantage on height or reach, training is useless”.
The fact that I even sent you an email this long makes me want to run through your roster to prove a point, but it is not worth the potential injuries. I have to protect my fighter lifespan, as I am 30 years old. I cannot take any injuries right now. Period.
Sit on that & respond later,
———
Gosh. . . it’s so good!
My favorite part is that he spelled out LOL and ended with “sit on that and respond later”
But sadly I won’t respond later because I believe this poor chap has lost his grip on reality.
A sad state of affairs for such a prize fighter.
But this stuff just isn’t like the feel good movies where anything is possible.
And I’m just not going to blow smoke up someone’s butt and tell them they’ll be the next Connor McGregor. It’s not right.
Sit on this video, and I’ll talk to you later.

In BJJ there is a move that inexperienced White Belts will do from dominant positions. I jokingly call it the “White Belt Hug.”
The White Belt Hug is where someone just grabs your upper body and squeezes. This typically makes it worse for the person on the bottom in Brazilian Jiu-jitsu because they are pulling the person’s weight even more down on top of them.
So now you have their top pressure combined with your arm strength pulling them down.
Now while the technique is absolutely terrible for escaping. It can be really irritating because it gets in the way and slows things down.
In this video I show a couple of simple options to counter this technique when someone is in Mount..
The 1st is a simple forearm in the throat to create a frame. Pay close attention to how I use my whole body to break the grip.
The second is a simple option where i go to S mount to setup an armbar.
Again, not a complicated technique, but this was the question I was asked so I hope this helps.
