In today’s video I answer a question related to how I test new supplements for BJJ training and seeing their affect on performance. So in this video I share the way I personally test out new supplements and dietary changes to see if it’s having a positive effect or negative effect on my Jiu-jitsu. In some cases I’m going off of how I feel where as others I’m actually getting blood drawn to test the changes.
The question came as a response to a segment on my podcast where I spoke about CBD and Charlotte’s Web cbd products. So I talk about the positive changes (especially with recovery) I’ve felt from taking cbd.
Which just for transparency Charlotte’s Web CBD is a sponsor of our podcast. but if you’d like to try any of their stuff head over to www.charlottesweb.com and use the promo code Chewjitsu to get 15% off of your total purchase.
If you’re in the market for new supplements to assist with your BJJ training then I hope the video is useful.
Thanks for watching.

In today’s BJJ video I cover what I believe is a common misconception about White Belt survival in Jiu-jitsu training. This video is in response to another Chewy Q&A I did where I spoke about 70% of Brazilian Jiu-jitsu is won and lost in the guard passing battle. This include passing guard, sweeping, not getting swept, guard retention, etc.
You can watch that original video where I discussed the idea to a White Belt who was feeling overwhelmed with techniques here: https://youtu.be/Lj_YN8wvxI0
Now in this video I talk about the misconception and break it down visually with Adam to illustrate my point. I hope this video helps you think of being able to survive in BJJ as more than just balling up and getting smashed on bottom. Because I believe if you’re strong from the guard passing (top and bottom) battle you’ll be ale to survive longer.
Hope the video is useful to you and your BJJ training.
Thanks for watching.

In this video I share a cautionary tale of how I did permanent damage to myself from returning to hard BJJ training too quickly after a layoff from Jiu-jitsu. I’m sharing this because a lot of people (including my students) are coming back to their gyms after the lockdown and quarantine and I’d like to make sure they don’t injure themselves like I did years ago.
In the video I’ll talk about 2 of my layoffs that came from minor injuries and then led to bigger injuries when I tried to resume my normal Brazilian Jiu-jitsu, lifting and conditioning training schedule too quickly.
This situation was created by a poor mindset and so I hope that by bringing it light I can help steer you away from making the same mistake I made twice in my life.
So watch the video and take the lessons to heart if you’re coming back to training after the lockdown.
Hope the video is useful and thanks for watching!

In today’s BJJ rolling video you’ll see me working from Full Guard. Since we are just getting back to Brazilian Jiu-jitsu training in our gym we are starting with training from Full Guard. Since Full Guard is one of the essential positions in Jiu-jitsu I figured it’d be a good place to start back.
During the Brazilian Jiujitsu training session you’ll see me trying to play from my Full Guard (which isn’t my best position) and using some techniques for guard retention. One of the rolls against my buddy and fellow Black Belt Chris was a back and forth battle. I did manage to catch a couple of submissions and techniques along the way.
Anyways, hope you enjoyed the roll. Feels good to be back on the mats. Hope you are or will be soon too.

If you’re working from the bottom of Full Guard it can be super difficult and frustrating to setup techniques against someone who’s simply staying tucked in tight and squeezing. So in this video I’m going to show you a sweep that every White Belt in BJJ knows that can be used as a sweep by itself or as a setup for other options.
In the video I show the basic Hip Bump / Kimura sweep and then show how it can be used as a way to uproot the top person from their tight defensive position. I’ve personally used the kimura sweep to armbar setup in my early White Belt and Blue Belt competitions.
So if you’re up against a tough guard passer who stays tight and defensive then I hope this video is useful to you. I know this idea was super useful to me.

Probably one of the biggest questions all BJJ newcomers have when is, “What should I focus on?” And with all the Brazilian Jiu-jitsu techniques out there it’s a good question. It can be overwhelming trying to decide on which specific techniques and positions to focus on.
But in this video I’m going to lay down a pretty good rule for you. This is something I’ve done since I was a BJJ White Belt and continue to do as a Black Belt. I also implement this idea into training my students with a lot of success.
So let’s jump into it.
When it comes to Jiu-jitsu. When you’re up against someone of similar skill, you’ll probably spend the bulk of your time passing guard and trying to sweep or submit from the bottom. Early on this will mostly be full guard or maybe half guard if you have short legs. Maybe you’ve never really thought about this before but I promise you if you think about it you’ll see this as accurate.
If you go watch any of my matches you’ll notice most are won this way. If I’m able to pass the guard I generally win. If I get the sweep I generally win.
This is true for most BJJ players. And the reason for this is positional control.
Most BJJ players live and die by the mantra “position before submission” and this is what it really boils down to when we are talking about guard passing. If the person can pass guard they control the position. If the person can retain their guard and use sweeps and submissions effectively, they control position.
Now there is still another whole battle to be fought once you’re in a dominant position. But winning the guard passing battle (on top or bottom) is what puts you in that dominant position first. So it is always a good place to focus on no matter what level you’re at.
Hope the talk is useful to you. Thanks for watching the video!
