Today’s video comes from Alex who’s curious why we have to roll again with the same person after we submit them during a roll. He says that in a competition we wouldn’t roll with the person again, it would be 1 and done. But in the gym he beats someone and then is too tired to execute the same attacks again in a 2nd round.
In the video I explain why we roll again. I mean the main reason is it’s training and not competition.
But even from a standpoint of being focused on BJJ competitions. It’s super important to roll in situations where you’re fatigued and unable to easily use your best Jiu-jitsu techniques. Because as any competitor will agree. At some point you’re going to find yourself in the middle of the mat exhausted and still have time on the clock and an opponent pressing forward. And while this is happening you’ll experience a sort of mental battle where 1 side of you tells you to push forward while the other says back off.
To conquer this you’ve got to become comfortable with the uncomfortable.
Hopefully the video was useful to you in some way.
Thanks for watching!

Today’s video is a quick video about how BJJ Black Belts get their stripes and promotions.
So in the video I share the basics of how I’ve been promoted and how the common stripe/belt promotion practice takes place for Brazilian Jiu-jitsu Black Belts. Now, I’m sure some systems could be different than the one I outline here. But this is the basic time requirements I’m familiar with and have been exposed to in my training.
Here’s a blog post with the chart that I was going off of: https://www.chewjitsu.net/2021/05/how-do-bjj-black-belts-get-their-stripes-promotions/
In the video I also share how old I’ll be when I can get the Red/Black and the final Red Belt of Jiu-jitsu. Since I was promoted to Black Belt when I was 26, I’ll be eligible for the final rank of BJJ when I am 89 years old.
. . . Let’s see if I even make that.
Anyways, hope the video was useful to you or at the very least maybe slightly entertaining based on how old I’ll be to get a Red Belt.

Today’s video comes from Silas who’s curious about potential benefits to training in a BJJ gym that doesn’t have air conditioning. In the video I share some ideas that might be useful to him in his Brazilian Jiu-jitsu training based on his question. I also share some potential benefits to training in a gym without AC.
That said, I personally like having a gym with air conditioning so I can control the temperature so it doesn’t get too hot and impede training.
Either way, hope the video is useful to you if you had a similar question.

In today’s BJJ technique video I show some basic details about the Anaconda Choke, Darce Choke and Brabo Choke. Mainly the differences of what they are, what they look like, how they work and some ideas on how to set them up in Brazilian Jiu-jitsu rolling or competing.
The question comes from one of our viewers who’s curious about all 3 of them and the differences to them.
So hopefully if you’re newer to BJJ this will help you understand which chokes are which.
Again, keep in mind this is a brief run down of them. All three of these submissions are complex options with lots of setups in Brazilian Jiu-jitsu. So if you have more specific questions feel free to ask in the comments.
Thanks for watching the video.

Today’s BJJ rolling video starts off with some hand fighting rounds to give everyone a chance to work on an Arm Drag series we had been doing. Grip fighting in the gi and hand fighting in no gi Brazilian Jiu-jitsu is super important in my bearded opinion. So basically during these rounds we locked up, moved around and went for arm drags but never finished any takedowns.
Afterwards we had full rolling. One of the rounds I had was with a tough young guy who was visiting our gym (he’s a friend of 1 of our Blue Belts). He’s a solid young BJJ competitor and MMA fighter.
Later on in the rolling you’ll see me hit an arm drag technique I was working.
You can check his stuff out at:

As always I hope you enjoyed the rolling videos.

In today’s video is I answer a question about whether someone should do the Adult or Masters division in a BJJ competition. The video comes from someone who is right at 30 years old which gives them the option of competing as an Adult or competing in Masters.
He had planned on doing the Brazilian Jiu-jitsu tournament at the adult category but his coach said he wanted him to do masters. And his question is just to get some perspectives on the differences between the two.
That decision is ultimately up to you whether you want to compete at the younger division or not. But hopefully from the video you’ll get some ideas to chew on to make the decision easier.

In today’s video I answer a question about the Flower Sweep and Pendulum Sweep from Full Guard. I’ll also show how I personally set them up and when I’ll go for 1 over the other. These are 2 incredibly strong fundamental BJJ sweeps from full guard that can also be used for setups and other submissions.
Like any set of techniques in Brazilian Jiu-jitsu they’re tools that need to be used at the right times.
Hopefully through the video you’ll get a better idea at what these sweeps are, how they work, when to use them and how to set them up.
Here’s an old video of a Flower Sweep I taught: https://youtu.be/JrW9IIlYs14
Hope the video is useful to you!

In today’s video I share a tip that came from a recent conversation I had with Renzo Gracie Black Belt Shawn Williams on our Chewjitsu Podcast. The podcast is already out. So check it out wherever you listen to podcast.
It’s also available on YouTube at: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCTSmtpFVLcZGS7G599_vCow
Anyways, during the podcast he gave a tip on how to train more BJJ and get injured less. It’s a tip many of us (who have trained for 20+ years) have learned.
It’s a simple tip and definitely doesn’t apply to all rolling and training situations in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. But it can still be super useful to get more mat time in with less injuries.
And this is important because more mat time is what progress is built on. So more mat time and less injuries (which also means more mat time) means you’ll have more chances to work on your game.
Hope the tip is helpful.
