Sometimes when you are going for the cutting armbar from the bottom your opponent pushes down low and presses towards the ground. Perhaps you have not placed your knee in as a protection against this defense…but no problem, you can move straight into the Kimura! Watch as I demonstrate this move, I think you will like it. Try it out on the mats and let me know how it goes.

The AWESOME – Cutting Armbar!
The AWESOME – Cutting Armbar! this is a quick look at part of a session on cutting armbars I did with my class recently. It is a really tough move and opens up many opportunities. Defenses against it are limited but (as always with Jiu Jitsu) there are counters to the counters. Take a look at this video. Treat the technique with respect. Let me know what you think
HOW To Escape HEADLOCK Control – EASY!
Escaping head lock control (Kesa Gatame) is part of our white belt syllabus. Why? because it is so fundamental to the sport of Jiu Jitsu. Learning this fundamental technique, early and correctly sets you on the right path. In our academy, many people use Kesa Gatame to full effect. The escape is mandatory. Check out this video. The technique is simple. Once you know how. Try it on the mat. And let me know how you go.
A Simple SECRET To The Basic FOOTLOCK!
This is a great little technique that can save you loads of hassle when you grab a great footlock but your partner knows how to counter. Including grabbing your lapel, jumping up on you etc…well this little trick will help stop these counters in their tracks! It’s simple and you really need it in your BJJ arsenal! Take a look at the video, give it a try on the mat and let me know how you go!
A State of MIND – to Finish From the Back – Every time!
In this video, I discuss a little trick that is more a state of mind an approach rather than a technique. But it’s easily just as effective. And it is often overlooked. Every time I tell my students this little trick their results from back control go through the roof! check out the video and give it a try on the mat. Let me know how you go
Some simple TRICKS to Make YOUR BRIDGE and ROLL Unstoppable!
The bridge and roll is basic. It is simple. It is taught very early on in the white belt syllabus – but so many of us stop using it. Because they are not using it correctly. There are some simple tricks that in reality are not tricks…they are MUSTS. If you do them…the bridge and roll will be your favorite technique. Not a forgotten one. So, watch this video. Learn the tricks. And give it a try on the mat. Let me know how you go.
Part 3 of 5 – An Alternative X Guard Sweep – Into a Footlock!
It is not uncommon to have completed the sweep discussed in the previous video a couple of times – to suddenly have your rolling partner counter/push against it. No problem. Use that energy to your advantage and sweep the other direction. Straight into a footlock (or alternative a relatively easy pass). It’s not hard, it just takes a little practice. Try it out on the mat and let me know how it goes.
Part 1 of 5: The AWESOME OverHook X-GUARD!
This is part of a series on x-guard I did with my academy recently. It really is an awesome guard and provides many options to sweep and submit your opponent. There are some variations and tricks and hacks that I discuss in this series. So watch closely. Give it a try on the mat. Let me know how it goes.
Two Hacks to GET THE SWEEP When You Are CLOSE But Not Quite There!
In this video I discuss Two Hacks to GET THE SWEEP When You Are CLOSE But Not Quite There. And how often does that happen? so much of Jiu Jitsu is getting close but it’s the final yards that are so difficult. Your partner is defending – so it’s not like drilling. That’s where these hacks come in. They help you leap over those last yards. Check out this video, give it a try on the mat and let me know how it goes…
Should You Start BJJ if You’re Out of Shape ?
Do I need to be in shape before I start BJJ?
This has to be one of the most commonly asked question I get from people who are new to Brazilian Jiu-jitsu.
Most commonly it stems from fear of the unknown. People often build a Brazilian Jiujitsu class up into something in their head. Then once they try it for the first time they realize it’s nothing like they expect.
I’ve spoken to many people who finally tried their first Brazilian Jiujitsu class and loved it. And many of them tell me that they wanted to train a long time ago. But didn’t because of fear of different things.
One of the fears that pops up a lot is not being in good enough shape.
But like many people will find. You can’t really get into the kind of shape you need to be in for BJJ until you start training BJJ.
So if you’re in the same boat as our friend Will. And you want to start BJJ training but you’re nervous about not being in good enough shape.
Don’t WAIT! Start training now.
Hope the video was helpful!

Why Am I a 1 Stripe White Belt? (I'm Smashing People)
Do you get hung on getting promoted as a BJJ White Belt? Do you see others get promoted but wonder why you weren’t picked?
I got this question recently. Our friend has been training Brazilian Jiu-jitsu and is doing really well. He’s winning BJJ competitions and smashing people in training.
BUT!
He’s still a 1 stripe White Belt and isn’t sure what’s up. He says that he even gives the Blue Belts in his Brazilian Jiujitsu gym a good run for their money. But yet he is still passed up for training.
My answer in this video is a little more direct. And I speak from more of the vantage point of a coach.
And in this situation I would tell anyone to let go of promotions and fall in love with the grind of BJJ training. Fall in love with the day to day cool stuff that happens. Rather than being fixated on getting the next stripe or belt.
Because you don’t have control over that.
And most importantly. It will fail you in the long term. The acquirement of a belt isn’t as meaningful as you think. The most meaningful part about the belt is the journey that was required to reach it.
I look back at my belts and I don’t really remember the promotions that much. Instead I remember the training and all the work that went into it.
That’s what’s important.
Hope the video helps!

A SNEAKY CHOKE When You Can’t Get The OMOPLATA!
Omoplata’s are super effective and deadly to use on the mat. But like everything…they don’t always work. Sometimes due to a number of circumstances you just can’t seem to finish them. Well, that’s ok! As long as you have another technique up your sleeve. Watch this video and you will. A sneaky little choke that will work when your Omoplata has failed.
The AWESOME S Mount ATTACK!
The s mount might be my favorite mount position – why? because it is a real kill position. There are so many options for you from S-mount and none of them are good for your opponent. Check this video out. Try it on the mat and let me know how you go…
The MOST Dangerous FOOTLOCK – Still Legal at Whitebelt!
This is a fantastic footlock that is still legal at whitebelt level in competition.
