Stop Getting Smashed in Side Control as a BJJ White Belt (Try This)
Getting flattened out in Side Control and being stuck underneath someone can be one of the toughest things to deal with as a White Belt in BJJ.
In the video a 6 Week White Belt is having this exact problem. He’s getting flattened out and crushed underneath larger Blue and Purple Belts.
Now as I express in the video. If you’re a BJJ White Belt and you’re against a Blue or Purple Belt in Brazilian Jiu-jitsu.
There’s probably nothing you can do to deal with it.
Their experience in Brazilian Jiujitsu will typically be too great for you to deal with.
But one of the simple lessons that really makes a big difference when trying to escape Side Control.
Is start by forgetting about the actual escape. And see if you can simply stay on your side.
If you’re on your side, your ability to escape Side Control goes up dramatically.
And I find that my White Belts experience a sharp increase in their ability to escape Cross Side in BJJ by simply focusing 1st on staying on their side.
So if you are experiencing this same issue. My challenge to you is this!
When you’re rolling during your next BJJ class. Just see if you can stay on your side by using the tips described in this video.
Hope the video helped!

Simple But Effective Counter to the Basic Double Stack Pass
One of the most common Guard passes many BJJ practitioners are taught early on is the very basic version of the Double Under Pass.
Some call it a Double Under Pass, others call it a Stack Pass.
Whichever name you use to describe this Brazilian Jiujitsu technique. It’s still a very powerful and easy to implement pass.
In this video I answer questions I received from many people regarding how to defend against this particular pass.
During the video Chad stacks me and as he passes I initiate a very simple but effective technique call the Stiff Arm Escape.
The Stiff Arm Escape is used anytime we have the person expose their armpit to us.
If you can see the back of their armpit and you have space to lock the arm out. Then you can do the Stiff Arm.
During the video I give some specific details that make this technique work.
So hopefully this counter / escape will help you with your Guard retention in Brazilian Jiujitsu.

Simple Begginer Sweep That Can Lead to a Tap
This Sweep is very simple and it comes from the seated guard. I really love using this motion to get in on my attacks. I will ether reach out and grab control of the hand/wrist or bait them to grab my hand. Ether one works and it will give me an effective way to get in on the legs and start attacking.
I mix my attacks between going under the legs and going to the de la riva. depending on the positioning of their legs. in my match my opponents legs were spread really far apart which mad it easy for me to get under and attack this sweep. If his legs were closer I may have went to another attack instead.
Thanks to Steven for the viewer video at the end! I showed this wrist lock setup to the takedown a few weeks ago and he hit it in a competition! If you have video of yourself hitting one of the techniques I’ve shown or just have something silly to share and you wanna be on the channel send an email to chad@chadthebeasthardy.com
A BJJ Butterfly Guard Pass So Smooth But Surprisingly Simple
This is one of my favorite Guard Passes in BJJ. And I’ve called in the Surfboard pass since I learned it.
What’s great about this pass is the functionality of it mixed with the appearance of being “fancy” or advanced.
When in fact, there’s not advanced or fancy about it. . .
It’s literally a technical standup / stand up and base mixed with a forward push to clear the legs.
This move came about because recently I posted a video of me and my students rolling.
And at some point in the video I hit the Surfboard pass against my student’s Butterfly Guard. And I received lots of questions asking what exactly the pass was.
As I said, this is one of my favorite Brazilian Jiujitsu guard passes to throw into the mix against an opponent’s Butterfly Guard.
So if you’re looking for a cool Guard pass technique to add into your Brazilian Jiu-jitsu game then I hope this move is useful for you!

Simple Foot Fighting Trick to Stop this Common BJJ Mount Escape
Nothing is quite as frustrating in BJJ as having a dominant position then losing it to someone who escapes.
Mount in Brazilian Jiu-jitsu is a fantastic position for maintaining strong control.
But there are a ton of escapes to it, and it can be tough to hold against someone with really good control.
A really smooth escape that I’ve seen a ton of people use is the foot slide escape.
Which is where the person on bottom of Mount turns their hips, hooks a foot and slides that foot into Half Guard.
It’s a great escape for Brazilian Jiu-jitsu.
In this video I show you a really simple adjustment of the feet to stop this Mount escape and then take Back Mount.
It’s a simple jiujitsu technique that is incredibly powerful.
If you want to try this escape out in the gym. Bait your partner into it by allowing them to setup the escape and then let them get out.
If you’re experiencing issues with people escaping your Mount during Brazilian Jiu-jitsu rolling or competitions.
Try this counter and back take!
I hope it’s helpful!

Best Method to Overcome the Crippling Nerves of BJJ Competition
How do you overcome the adrenaline of a BJJ competition. Better yet, how do you get over your 1st competition which you completely bombed?
This is the question our buddy Mike sent to me following his less than desirable performance at a recent IBJJF Brazilian Jiu-jitsu competition.
He says the biggest BJJ related problem he experienced with this competition was the nerves and adrenaline that came with it.
He said the adrenaline completely prevented him from playing his game and doing what he wanted to do.
And after under performing during the tournament.
He wants to know how to quell the adrenaline he felt in his 1st crack at BJJ tournaments.
In this video I share a story about 1 of my students who experienced back to back losses before he eventually began winning competitions.
I also touch on the idea that it will become less stressful with time and more experience.
When you compete, it’s a sub skill of BJJ.
It takes a different set of attributes to compete than simply practicing in your gym.
I hope the video is help!

Awesome BJJ Open Mat and Tough Rolls (Jordan Throws Me @ 5:28)
During the summer of 2017 my friends Jordan Sullivan and Clay Mayfield got together and had a killer Open Mat rolling session here at our gym Derby City MMA in Louisville, KY.
In the beginning of the video you’ll see a funny bit of happenings that were going on at the time.
People were leaving Nutella in my office when I was away.
This was because I eat really well most of the time. But I really like Nutella.
So I don’t ever even open the container because if I start eating it, I’ll eat the whole thing.
After that bit of humor we got to the BJJ rolling.
You’ll see me during the Brazilian Jiu-jitsu rolling session using some of my tried and true techniques.
You’ll also see me get hit with my training partners techniques.
At one point my buddy Jordan (another BJJ Black Belt) threw me and I was sent scrambling to regain position.
He’s always a tough roll and it was a lot of fun.
And you’ll also see me roll with Clay who is a scrappy Brown Belt and is a great BJJ training partner.
I hope you enjoy the little peak into our BJJ training at our gym.
And if you’re ever able to stop by for a BJJ Open Mat. You should do it!
Thanks for watching!

I Didn’t Know How to Effectively Coach my BJJ Teammates
What’s the best way to help coach someone during a BJJ tournament or match?
This is today’s question which comes from Joe in the Chewjitsu Facebook group.
During the video I talk about some of the practices that have been helpful to me both as a competitor and a BJJ coach.
You might find that you do some of the things I’m talking about not doing during a Brazilian Jiu-jitsu Competition.
And if that’s the case, don’t consider me automatically right. Try some of the coaching tips I give in this video and see how they work for you.
I also talk about an MMA fight and some of my past matches to give examples of why I favor these queues as a coach.
But if you ever find yourself in the situation Joe did during the Brazilian Jiujitsu tournament, and have to coach your training partners and teammates. . .
I hope the tips in this video are useful for you!

How to Stop Losing Mount In BJJ (And Add More Pressure On Top)
Would you like to have more pressure from the Mount position in BJJ?
The Mount can be one of the best position in BJJ if you know how to use it.
You can slowly squeeze the life from your opponent and setup the submission.
It’s also a great position from a fighting stand point.
The only problem is, it can also be a very difficult position to hold at times.
Many people in Brazilian Jiu-jitsu experience an issue where they can’t seem to generate much pressure, or hold the Mount.
This is a problem I’ve experienced as many of my students have as well.
In this video, I show some very simple adjustments to the way that you hold the mount position. Which can make all the difference.
The biggest idea I share in this video is getting the weight off the hips.
With the weight placed on the persons hips they have a lot of power beneath you to lift you and knock you off balance.
I’ve found from years of Brazilian Jiujitsu that it’s easier for me, and harder for my opponent to escape, if I hold mount higher up.
They have less drive from their hips and I’m able to put more pressure on them.
Hope this video helps you with your BJJ Mount attacks!

A Great Guard in BJJ for Short People or Short Legs
What’s the best Guard for a shorter person with strong thick legs?
This is the question I received from a White Belt who is a short powerlifter and has some super strong legs.
Her issue is that when she plays her BJJ game from the bottom she has trouble getting the positions and techniques to work for her.
In my experience with Brazilian Jiu-jitsu as someone who has shorter legs for his height, and as someone who has found themselves against people 300+ on more than 1 occasion.
Full guard is generally not going to be the most idea position for someone with shorter legs.
Personally, Half Guard became my go to Guard in Brazilian Jiu-jitsu almost as soon as I began getting exposed to it.
The advantage the Half Guard gives to someone with short legs or who is much smaller than their opponent.
Is. . .
1. You only have to get your legs around 1 leg! Not their entire waist.
2. Being smaller or more stocky. It’s a position in Brazilian Jiujitsu that favors a more compact build.
So if you’re having issues with full guard and you’re on the shorter / stockier side, or maybe you’re opponent is just much bigger.
Than try using the BJJ Half Guard. This will probably open up options to Butterfly Guard and X Guard in the future as well.
In the video I show an entry into the Half Guard from Mount.
Hope the video helps!

How Hard Should You Roll Leading Up to BJJ Competitions
How hard should you roll in your gym leading up to a BJJ competition and how often should you roll that way?
This is the question Damon asked after competing in his 1st BJJ competition ever.
His question stems from the fact that the tournament match was so intense.
And he says he typically doesn’t feel that level of intensity during his Brazilian Jiu-jitsu training.
In the video I try to explain my thoughts on BJJ training and rolling in the gym vs a Brazilian Jiujitsu match in a competition.
And it’s my belief that while sometimes your training partners will exceed the skill level of your opponents in a competition, making a match easy.
You probably won’t be able to replicate the same level of intensity from a BJJ competition inside your gym.
Watch the video and see what you think.
Enjoy the video.
