Grip strength and grip endurance is a big question for people getting into Brazilian Jiu-jitsu.
I’ve received questions from countless BJJ practitioners about how to build better grip strength because during their matches or rolls in the gym they feel like their grip goes out.
Today’s question comes from KevMed who says that despite weight lifting. He lacks grip strength when he is training Brazilian Jiu-jitsu.
In this video I briefly touch on the idea of building stronger grips and focus more on how to make your grips last longer as a White Belt.
As a White Belt I can almost guarantee that KevMed is grabbing everything with a death grip.
I say this because I know as a BJJ White Belt. . . I did. And as a coach I see this over and over again with my new White Belts.
The newer people in the gym will hold grips as tight as they can and will wear their hands out in a minute or so and then are left with nothing.
So if you’re a newer White Belt or someone who just finds themselves gripping everything as tight as possible. Then I hope this tip is helpful!

BJJ sport training is one of the only sports I’ve ever seen where there is very little methodology of how hard to train.
Most sports combine some mixture of hard and lighter elements of training to round things out.
But Brazilian Jiu-jitsu often doesn’t. So practitioners often fall into this misconception that the only way to get better in BJJ is to GO HARD all the time.
In today’s video I answer a question from our friend who is asking about how to roll with weaker smaller people during BJJ training.
He says this not because he wants to adjust to them, but because he implies that he isn’t going to improve if he rolls wit them.
I try to debunk this myth by sharing how I rolled with mostly White and Blue Belts for some of my early Black Belt competitions.
Very similar to weaker people in the gym. I could crush them if I wanted. But I roll with them very deliberately to improve and prepare myself for Black belt matches.
If you’re in a similar situation in BJJ. I hope this video encourages you to think a little differently about how you can train with smaller, weaker or less skill BJJ training partners.
Talk to you next time!

What do you do if you don’t like the way your BJJ coach directs you at competitions or training?
This is our “Bob” question today from one of the viewers who is a Blue Belt in BJJ and dislike how their coach. . . coaches them.
They said that the coaching style is not preferable because it’s more of a barking demanding style.
Meaning when competing they yell and scream to tell them to do certain things. This disrupts “Bob” and causes them to perform worse.
This is demonstrated by the fact that when their coach isn’t there, Bob has done really well.
So in this video I talk about how to talk to your Brazilian Jiu-jitsu coach about difficult topics.
If you’re having a situation with your coach and need to bring up a difficult topic. I hope this helps.

The UFC’s inaugural event on ESPN+ on January 19 is headlined by a historic matchup as the bantamweight champion, TJ Dillashaw, goes down a weight class to challenge the flyweight champion and Olympic gold medalist, Henry Cejudo, for his belt. Take a look back at Dillashaw’s recent title defense against Cody Garbrandt at UFC 227 last August.

I received a question from a BJJ Dad who says his son is on the fence about quitting BJJ competitions.
Initially his son started doing the Brazilian Jiu-jitsu competitions but after 5 losses he’s lost his fire.
His dad is wondering if he should continue to push his son or simply let him quit Brazilian Jiujitsu all together.
In this video I share why I believe he should nudge his son forward with his competitions.
In BJJ, as with any hard to acquire skill, there are sticky points. And these sticky points are what separate people. There are those who quit when things get tough and those who continue to push on.
The good news is that you can develop the ability to push onward. It’s just like any muscle. You have to work on it and develop it.
I even share a story about one of the members of my Kids BJJ program who broke through this same barrier.
So listen to the stories in the video and hopefully this is useful for at least entertaining.

I love BJJ training but my family hates it! What should I do?
This is the question I got from our friend Liz who is a White Belt in today’s Chewy Ramble.
I related to Liz because when I started Wrestling, BJJ and MMA. My mother was very much against the idea.
Now she was super supportive. She always had my back. But she didn’t like the idea of me fighting.
I don’t think she was against Brazilian Jiu-jitsu or MMA because she hated it, but because she was concerned for me.
I remember when I won my 1st MMA fight. I showed my mom and after seeing the fight. My mom hit me and called me mean!
And she would always ask me, “Why are you doing this?”
Now even though she didn’t like it, she respected it. And she respected it because of the hard work I put into it and the dedication she saw.
In the video I share how I believe Liz’s family will slowly begin to respect her decision to get into Brazilian Jiujitsu and grappling.
It happens overtime because they realize that it’s REAL, it’s not going away.
So Liz, I hope this video was helpful. And if you’re into BJJ and having a similar issue, I hope it’s helpful to you.

When I am passing the Guard of someone with long legs in Brazilian Jiu-jitsu. I typically begin to force Half Guard.
By doing this I am able to get closer and make it harder to their leg length.
In this video I show my strategy against long legged BJJ practitioners.
I also touch on the idea of how to deal with Knee Shields and Spider Lasso grips by avoiding tension.
Along with the positional elements I use to force and pass Half Guard in Brazilian Jiujitsu. I also talk about strong head positioning.
As I’ve shared before. Head positioning is often overlooked in BJJ, which is unfortunate, because it’s incredibly powerful.
Locking someones head position makes it very difficult for them to defend your offensive weapons.
This video is more of a strategy or concept video rather than a hard technique video.
It’s just a few ideas for your to Chew On with your BJJ training or competitions.
Get it. . . Chew On?
Anyways, I hope you enjoyed the video!
