How to setup the basics half guard sweep
Master Ricardo showing Big Mike from RCBJJ -GORILLA JUDO /JIU-JITSU Oklahoma one basic sweep from half guard
I recently got asked several times to do something from X Guard. So in today’s video I’m going to cover a sneaky BJJ Oma Plata setup from X Guard that they wont see coming.
I’ll assume if you’re watching this that you can already get to X Guard during your BJJ training or rolling.
Once there the big thing you need to focus on is continually off balancing your training partner or opponent.
This stops them from being able to counter your position. Instead they are working on maintaining their balance. This is a pretty constant principle for Brazilian Jiu-jitsu.
While off balance I show the Oma Plata setup. So the idea is, while they are focused on their balance they won’t be able to see or defend the Oma Plata setup.
The Oma Plata is by itself a strong submission attempt. But in addition to this, it’s also a powerful position that transitions to lots of other options like Guard sweeps and other submissions.
So if you’re someone who uses X Guard in Brazilian Jiujitsu then I hope this setup is useful for you during rolling or competitions.
Talk to you next time!

What are some options after the Knee Cut Pass in BJJ?
This is the question for today’s Brazilian Jiu-jitsu technique video.
In this video I show some of my favorite options after using the Knee Cut Pass. You might also call this the Cut Through or Knee Slice Pass.
Whatever you call it, it’s a great pass for Brazilian Jiujitsu and is incredibly common.
One thing that will often happen when using the pass is that your opponent will attempt to get up to their side and turn towards you.
In a lot of cases I find my rolling partner or opponent digging for underhooks which is a good option for them.
When this underhook comes that’s when I spring my trap and use some of my favorite options.
A lot of times in this situation I look for my Step Over to the Back. And when working with the black position. At times I’ll abandon the traditional “Position Before Submission” attitude and just dive for a choke submission!
And I’ve found that to be helpful in a lot of situations.
So check out the video and I hope it’s helpful for you!

Everyone wants the ability to roll with bigger stronger people in Brazilian Jiu-jitsu, right?
I mean it’s part of the mythology of BJJ. That technique trumps all. That some of the Gracies were smaller, weaker people and they were able to win their opponents.
In this video I explain how if you want to be a Giant Slayer in BJJ you have to be willing to walk in the Land of The Giants.
What I mean by this is that if you want to be able to use your Brazilian Jiujitsu techniques against bigger people. You’ve got to be willing to roll, drill and train with big guys during your BJJ training.
I share a short story about one of my smallest students who was forced to learned how to use his BJJ against some of the biggest guys in my gym.
If you’re a smaller weaker person and you’re trying to beat bigger people in BJJ. I hope this video is helpful.

Have you ever heard of the term “Gym Enforcer” at your Brazilian Jiu-jitsu academy?
It’s a pretty simple idea. Just like the old hockey enforcers who were sent out to check certain players on the ice. A gym enforcer is there to check certain behaviors on the mat.
In this video our friend Dee was put in the position as gym enforcer by his coach.
There was a mat bully in the BJJ gym he trains at who was roughing people up unnecessary and not being safe. The coaches had talked to the guy. But he still continued.
So Dee, who is a BJJ Brown Belt, was told to put it on the guy and he did.
The bad part for Dee is that the guy hasn’t made it back to training since. And he feels like maybe he ruined someone’s Brazilian Jiu-jitsu experience.
In this video I share that the idea of a gym enforcer in your Brazilian Jiujitsu gym is fairly common.
You don’t rough people up unnecessarily but you need people to be aware of reality.
If you were on a basketball team and you had a new player who wasn’t very good, but better than some, begin talking trash to the players. You might have one of the better players school him on the court to check the situation before it becomes negative to the whole team.
I also share how being a gym enforcer is helping maintain the safe boundaries inside of your gym and share a term I read in a book called Iron John.
The term is Walled Garden, and simply means establishing a secure place for us to cultivate ourselves.
This cultivation cannot happen if people are creating negativity inside the ranks of the gym.
Enjoy the video!
