Is Boxing better than Brazilian Jiu-jitsu for self-defense or fighting situations? Is BJJ unrealistic compared to the sweet science of stand up martial arts?
This is the question for todays video which comes from our friend who says his friend has told him that Brazilian Jiujitsu is not an effective martial art and is useless for a street fight.
I obviously disagree with this viewpoint as someone who has used BJJ in fighting situations and has taught students who have as well. I do not believe this.
But in the video I try to talk more about combat sports as a whole and the benefit of them. Whether it’s Boxing, BJJ, Judo, Wrestling, etc. Combat sport based martial arts pose a different benefit than some traditional martial arts.
Mainly this is the fact that they spar all the time. This allows the practitioner to develop the ability to deal with stress which will help them navigate the unpredictable circumstances of a street fight or self-defense situation.
Also combat sports have “unrealistic” fighting scenarios in competition. BJJ vs BJJ doesn’t always look realistic to a fight. But Boxing too is unrealistic where if you clinch up with someone you get broken up by the ref. This doesn’t happen in a fight.
Ultimately though, I think that the competition experience lends itself to making someone more effective in a fighting situation.
And if you are someone interested in self defense or having to be in a fighting situation. I would encourage you to practice both BJJ and Boxing or Wrestling and Kickboxing. Just some form of grappling and striking.

Would you like to add more pressure with your BJJ game. Maybe Side Control or Mount positions? Perhaps you’d like the ability to make your submissions a little stronger?
In this video I share some simple tips I give to my White Belts that you can incorporate with your Brazilian Jiu-jitsu training to add more strength and power to these positions.
In the video I talk about how often, at least early on, people become focused on one part of their body in absence of the other.
So if someone is in side control they SQUEEZE with the arms but the rest of the body is not doing much. If someone goes for an Armbar they may begin focusing on just a pull of the arms instead of a whole body extension against their opponent.
During the video I share a couple of examples of how you could add more pressure and tightness. These are tips I share with my BJJ White Belts all the time and they’re helpful for them with their training and rolling.
So if you’re having trouble keeping pressure in positions or maybe you just want to add more to your Brazilian Jiujitsu game. Then I hope this video is helpful.

Fasting has a ton of health benefits but is it the best thing to do when training BJJ? What about BJJ competitions, is being in a fasted state ideal?
In this video I answer this question. Which honestly has been asked a ton recently so I wanted to answer it.
In the video I share a story about one of my BJJ White Belts who recently had his very first Brazilian Jiu-jitsu tournament and he did so in a fasted state. I talk about how that went in the video.
I also share my personal experience with Brazilian Jiujitsu training and rolling, along with lifting weights, in a fasted state.
Again, I share how it went in the video.
But if you’re considering training or competing in BJJ in a fasted state I would ultimately encourage you to test it out and see how it works for you. Too many people decide to do things based off of what they hear or see other people talking about.
Allow yourself to develop your own belief based on your personal experience as well.

Do you work on something specific during your BJJ rolling? In this video from one of our Friday morning classes I was specifically working Half Guard sweeps and a slick Back Take from Honeyhole.
These techniques were specific to my current goals in Brazilian Jiujitsu.
If you want to stop BJJ training plateaus, I can’t encourage you enough to try and focus on something specific from time to time during your training.
Having specific techniques to work on really helps you sharpen your skills in a particular area.

Want to learn a slick Armbar for BJJ in the Gi? Want ADAM to teach it? Well then this is your video.
We’ve had several requests for Adam to teach a Brazilian Jiu-jitsu technique on the channel. And in today’s video I step aside and allow our favorite Uke to demonstrate a technique of his own.
That’s right the tables have turned on Chewy and Adam for this video.
This Armbar variation is primarily for the gi as it will involve a gi speific grip on the belt. While it could be adapted for no gi as well. It’s a gi move.
So if you’re looking for another Armbar to throw into the mix than I hope this Brazilian Jiujitsu technique is useful for you.
Give it a try the next time you’re in this position when rolling or training.
Oh and if you enjoyed the video! Throw Adam some love in the comments. 🙂

Can BJJ help depression? This is the question from our friend Alexander today.
I assume he is depressed and wondering if Brazilian Jiu-jitsu would be helpful in combating the mental illness.
In this video I share two books, and some of my own experiences.
Here are the two books I reference and the links to them. Heads up these are affiliate links. So if you buy from them it gives me a kickback. This costs you nothing. I just wanted to be upfront.

Most of us feel amazing after a bout of exercise. Maybe tired, but good over all. And in the video I share 1 of the reasons why scientists theorize why we feel so good after exercise.
Besides referencing books I also share some stories from experience with myself and my students about how Brazilian Jiujitsu has been useful with treating their depression.
All in all I do think that BJJ training could be useful for depression. Obviously it’s no substitute for medication or a doctors guidance. But from what I’ve seen from my friends and students. It can be helpful.
Let me add a big line of caution. If you have any questions about treatment for depression and medications. Please contact a doctor for more guidance.

Is getting a promotion in BJJ simply about winning competitions and medals? I don’t think so, but belts are also very subjective.
In this video we have a question from a BJJ Blue Belt who has a strong wrestling background as he’s been doing it since he was 11.
Since transitioning to Brazilian Jiu-jitsu he’s found that he’s been very effective in BJJ competitions. Medaling or winning every single tournament he’s done.
As a Blue Belt he’s continued this winning streak and recently when his coach began to give out promotions he was for sure that he would get promoted.
But he didn’t get promoted and he’s not sure what gives.
In this video I explain how I think a big part of his promotion, or lack thereof, is based upon his reluctance to play Guard or from any bottom positions in BJJ.
As a coach, I think it’s imperative that every person have the ability to play off their back. It’s one of the defining characteristics of Brazilian Jiujitsu. But it’s also something very unnatural to people from a wrestling background.
So if you’re a wrestler or someone resistant to the bottom game in BJJ, either during rolling or competition. Then I hope this video is useful to you!

In this video I show a simple way to use the Ankle Pick in BJJ to counter stiff arm grips with the gi.
If you’ve ever been in the middle of a good match then you know the grips can get really frustrating to deal with.
In this video I answer a question from our friend who says that when he rolls from the feet his opponent’s are just using a straight stiff arm to keep away. It makes his ability to do takedowns difficult.
His question goes on to ask about how to do an ankle pick using the kimono in Brazilian Jiujitsu.
So in this video I share one of my favorite ankle pick variations.
Keep in mind there are a ton of variations to the ankle pick. And when you add the gi into the mix there are even more!
But this simple variation is a good way to counter the grips we discuss in the video.
So whether it’s for your BJJ training in the gym or the opening move of your upcoming BJJ competition. I hope this technique serves you and your takedown game well!

6am: Wake, meditation , bike ride then breakfast
7:30am-10:30am: Work related to back end processes of our businesses.
11am – 12:30: Brazilian Jiu-jitsu training.

Today’s video is a little different than the typical Chewy Q&A or technique video.
A while ago I was asked from several people on instagram about a day in the life video. So I figured we would do these daily vlogs from time to time.
In today’s video I take you guys along one of my boring ole Mondays haha.
Mondays are my usually my day of the week where I am doing meetings and a lot of boring stuff. They’re a pretty busy day but there is some BJJ training squeezed in there.
Hopefully you enjoyed the video and if you’d like to see more, please leave a comment below.
