Today’s BJJ Q&A video is from Josh who’s a big guy who wants to move more like a “little” guy. I put that in air quotes because I know plenty of smaller BJJ practitioners who have great smash games. But getting back to his question he says that during his Brazilian Jiu-jitsu practices, his coach encourages him towards a more pressure and smash style game whereas he seems interested in a lot of open guards and other positions more commonly associated with smaller Brazilian Jiu jitsu players.
In this video I’ll explain why you want to have a big guy game and a little guy game (and how you can make that happen). I’ll also talk about why you should always keep in mind that your BJJ game is your own and you can create it however you’d like.

In today’s video I share a quick story from a BJJ training session with a Crossfit athlete who was also a college wrestler, and has also did some Brazilian Jiu-jitsu. Because of his wrestling base he definitely gave me a unique look and shut down my Half Guard game. Every time I’d come up for a sweep I just couldn’t quite finish it. Instead I had to switch up to Butterfly Guard to get a sweep.
I share this with you because the problem solving mindset I have when I train with people like that is not the one I’ve always had. And if you’re a BJJ practitioner yourself you definitely need to maintain that mindset, especially against people with certain attributes that give you trouble.

I say this because all to often I hear BJJ players make excuses as to why something doesn’t work like, “Oh they’re just strong.” You don’t want to be one of these people.
I also give you an update on how my weight loss is going. Currently I’m down to about 200-202 in the morning and have lost around 10lbs and it’s steadily declining. More on that to come.

The average cop in America gets 4 hours of defensive tactics training every 2 years. FOUR HOURS!!! Not only is this costing law enforcement lives, it is also costing civilian lives, since untrained officers will resort to higher levels of force MUCH more rapidly than their well-trained counterparts. The craziest part is that Police Chiefs around the country KNOW that their officer are disastrously undertrained, and the reasons why they aren’t making changes has puzzled me for well over a decade, but we have finally cracked the code. We have a plan that will give every officer in America at least 1 hour of jiu-jitsu training per week, and I will be announcing it very shortly.
Back story: Officer Sale reportedly responded to a disturbance where he got into an altercation with a suspect in a small town in North Carolina. He was the only officer on patrol. He lost his radio and his gun during the 11-minute fight after which he was airlifted to a hospital.
