The front headlock is inherently a controlling position that possibly even turn into a submission opportunity. Knowing how to defend and counter this hold is crucial in grappling of all styles. Chaining together a classic 50/50 rear takedown with a pass to leg drag back take option, as well as an option for a seated ham sandwich. Always a blast training and exchanging ideas with my @endeavordcf family like @boomboomcheney and @jannettiaaron who is behind the camera in this one.

The guillotine is one of the most fundamental chokes of submission grappling, and works at every level. It has applications for gi, no gi, mma and self defense. So, knowing the most essential elements of setting it up and finishing it, as well as variations and combos, is crucial for everyone. This video is to help polish up the details for any and everyone. Rolling backtakes have become part of modern jiu-jitsu, but they’re undeniably intimidating. Here’s the simplest one you can do: just learn to identify the trigger position (3/4 mount), make sure his hands are on one side of your body, and then roll on the other side. There are many details, tweaks, and variations that we’ll cover at some point in the future, but I just want to get you hitting this move so that you learn to believe in it. Let me know how this goes!

I have fell in love with the Switch from the Guards the last few years and teach it often. I was at an open mat with 7 black belts and a bunch of savage purples that work AGF. We were in Jackson, Mississippi at my buddy Anthony Mitchell’s gym, Precision Martial Arts.

This is the one move I have accidentally knocked out a training partner with while going fast. Be careful! Once you understand it it can be done controlled though and vs any foot placement by an opponent.

The Dragon Sleeper Hold from North / South. This is a powerful move that I generally only use and teach for the back take aspect of it, rather than the submission itself because the danger involved. This clip is from a recent seminar I taught at @fxselfdefense in Sylva, NC. Huge thanks to them for having me out!

De la Riva is one of the most popular guards (along with variations of it) for competition in gi, no gi and even to a lesser degree in MMA. Understanding not only how to set up sweeps and submissions from this guard, but just how to energetically play this guard in general, can mean the difference between having a lot of success with it as a valuable tool, or failing miserably every time you try to access it. In this video, I discuss some extremely useful attacks with DLR, as well as ways to set it up and control it well. Hope you enjoy.

The Chopping Block is the common popular name given to the high mount position with the head and arm isolated. This powerful position is useful for setting up not only arm triangles, but arm locks, punch chokes and back takes as well. One of the most common reactions to being put into the Kimura Trap TV position is to bridge and roll. It is instinct for people to try and recover top position, and we get to use that instinct against them!

By bridging, they have exposed their back. That allows us to attack and take their back while getting a choke set up simultaneously.
