Modern Jiu-Jitsu, a new Grapplearts Instructional available at https://www.grapplearts.com/modern, covers the techniques that have revolutionised jiu-jitsu including the berimbolo, crab ride and rolling back take!
Today I have a BJJ back take when someone sits back to honeyhole/saddle position for leg locks. The move is a bit surprising if you haven’t seen it and will definitely grab some attention.
In this video I show a back take I’ve been working on recently. If you’ve watched some of my most recent BJJ rolling videos you’ve seen it used in action.
After getting several requests from people I figured I’d share it with you.
The back take happens from the Saddle / Honeyhole / Sankaku position. Jeez, so many names to symbolize 1 position. Anyway, that’s where the back take starts. It starts with the person sits back to attack your legs.
In the video I give a couple of details on the technique and also show a way that you can put the “training wheels” on. What I mean by this is to make the movement easier to get started. A lot of times I have scaled options of techniques for people to begin with if the regular version is too difficult.
So check out the technique and give it a try! I hope the technique works for you!

In this video I show a Oma Plata escape that leads into Back Mount that you can use in BJJ. I recently hit this in one of our rolling videos from a Brazilian Jiu-jitsu training session we had and I received a question about how I used the technique.
In the video of our rolling, which is clipped into the video, I got caught in a triangle choke position. Then after escaping the triangle my student switched to an oma plata submission. I countered this by hopping over and then getting into the back mount position.
If you’ve followed me for anytime then you know my Brazilian Jiujitsu style is all about getting to the back. I’m always trying to find a way to make it to back mount because I find it to be one of the best position for my game personally.
I hope you enjoy the escape / counter and hopefully it will help you with your own training.

In this BJJ rolling video video at our gym Derby City MMA you’ll see a good mixture of takedowns, guard passing and I almost got my back taken during one of my rolls by one of my purple belts.
During the BJJ rolling session I started off light with one of my purple belts who is nursing a rib injury. From there we picked up the intensity.
My second roll was with one of my BJJ purple belts who is also a MMA fighter and former wrestler. After a solid takedown he came after my back and almost had it!
After I managed to get out of the position I got on top and went for my own attacks. A lot of times when I roll with my guys I have to turn it up a little bit because they are getting good enough to give me a lot of trouble.
My last roll was with one of my other purple belts who is the kind of guy in Brazilian Jiu-jitsu that is 200+lbs and somehow manages to bend and fold in half. During our roll we had some great scrambles. 1 where he caught me in a leg attack and another where I was able to get around to the back.
Hope you enjoyed the rolling video.

Never be the dog chasing the car. Getting to the back mount is awesome, but not if you can’t maintain it or hit a submission. This video offers some of the most valuable tips for controlling the back mount position, tricks for setting up conventional subs and also some non-conventional ones people don’t always see coming.

What’s the most dominant position in Brazilian Jiu-jitsu? In my humble opinion. I think it’s Back Mount.
Even more so I think the most dominant variation of Back Mount is when we have the person flattened out on their belly with our hooks in.
In a fight the person is literally helpless. And in BJJ whether it’s training in the gym or competitions we can attack aggressively for the choke.
In this video I answer a question for Mckenzie who is having trouble finishing from the Belly down back mount.
I show 2 different ways to approach finishing from this devastating position.
With both positions I show how to finish the rear choke. But I also talk about how the position could be used for a fight or match.
If you’re having a similar problem with your Back Mount in Brazilian Jiu-jitsu. Particularly when you find yourself in the belly down position. Then I hope the video is helpful!
Talk to you guys next time.
