If you just think of a submission just as an attack then you’ll have a very difficult time submitting good people. The truth is that in order to submit skilled grapplers you first have to be able to control them in that position, which means thinking about and training submissions as positions. Firstly, I don’t know what else to call this position and I definitely don’t claim to have invented it. This is however a fun and frustrating position with lots of great submission possibilities from it. This is a bottom cradle variation with rubber guard elements, making for a really strong position. There is a principle I use all the time when discussing escaping submission attempts, whether early escaping or late escaping. I refer to this as the “Fish Hook Principle” and I explain the story behind why in the video. Most all submission escapes operate under this principle and the rest is just timing and technique, which is simplified by understanding this underlying concept. Hope this helps!

Recently I had 2018 IBJJF World Champ Mahamed Aly out to our gym to train and do some videos.

In this video Mahamed focused his attention to White Belts defending armbars. So in this video we show an armbar escape.

He said when he was a White Belt in Brazilian Jiu-jitsu he didn’t want to tap and would get his arm popped all the time. He’d leave training with sore arms.

So to help White Belts and any Brazilian Jiujitsu practitioner with their ability to survive. He shows a slick armbar defense.
