The Halloween Season is upon us, and I’ve been trying to comb through Halloween themed submissions. Typically, I refer to this as The Puppet Master, but it’s also commonly called The Scarecrow position. Either way it works. What are some other Halloween sounding grappling moves?
These are three ways to attack the arm from crucifix, using the legs. The branch up, straight and branch down arm bars are great initial options, depending on the energy of the opponent.
Don’t get caught in head and arm chokes…or any submission, for that matter. But, since it is inevitable that you will get caught, it is important to have late escapes, as well as early ones. This video details the sequence of escapes and the procedure for applying them effectively to counter the head and arm choke.

Getting to the back is one thing, but controlling it and effectively attacking from there is a different story. My feeling is that you need to be fundamentally sound and controlling, but also relentless with combining threats, conventionally and unconventionally. De la Riva is one of the most popular guards (along with variations of it) for competition in gi, no gi and even to a lesser degree in MMA. Understanding not only how to set up sweeps and submissions from this guard, but just how to energetically play this guard in general, can mean the difference between having a lot of success with it as a valuable tool, or failing miserably every time you try to access it. In this video, I discuss some extremely useful attacks with DLR, as well as ways to set it up and control it well. Hope you enjoy.

These are two of my favorite submissions from kesa gatame – the step over straight arm lock and the far side arm crush. Longer videos on my channel on more subs from this position.
No ninja stuff here. This head hook arm bar is a great option for an opponent who defends the initial arm bar with posture.
Countering the calf slicer with an armbar. Definitely a late defense, but a bold one that has a big reward if you pull it off. This and a lot of other submissions from submission counters up on my YT channel now.

This shoulder wrap type of clinch from guard is interesting and fun. I can not only lead to some great sweeps, transitions and submission setups, it can act as a counter-measure against some passes and offensive movements your opponent may throw at you. As I mention in this video, I learned this from Greg Nelson some time ago, and I have been playing with it, trying to get a deeper understanding and make it my own. This over hook arm wrap guard position has been a favorite of mine for years. So many great options, from chokes to sweeps to arm locks. This sequence is a great one and the slot machine Americana at the end is a gem.
