Big Secret – My 40 Year Old Students Are The Toughest!

This may be different to a lot of academies…but I get the feeling that it’s probably not. The toughest guys in my academy – are around 40 years old! now that might be counter intuitive. One would suspect that as the decades move along that the students would get a little weaker. But, certainly, in my academy, the opposite seems to be true. The reason for this phenomena is, I think, simple…the 40-year-olds don’t come with bags of ego and just forget about the bullsh@t and just want to learn, roll and get better. It’s that simple. Any why should it be any other way. Let me know your thoughts guys?

Mount Escape Using The Awesome Deep Half!

We have been looking at some mount escapes recently. And a mount escape into deep half maybe my favourite. To the novice when you are in deep half it might appear that you have not progressed your position. But nothing could be further than the truth. When you are in a truly good deep half…you are in control and you will get that sweep! It takes a while to get the ‘feel’ for this position but stick with it. Once you perfect it…even when your partner knows you are going for deep half – they will struggle to prevent it. This is enormously popular with my students and is used often on the mat and to great impact in competition. Watch this video carefully as I take you over the little tips and tricks that make all the difference.

Mount Escapes To Ashi Garami!

Hi guys – this film is from a recent class in which I take my students over the details of a mount escape that move into either a hook sweep or an Ashi Garmai. Either move is great. I like the Ashi Garami because it provides the instant opportunity for a leg attack – such as a footlock. The hook sweep is fantastic as well. The Hip Bump Triangle!

The Hip Bump Triangle – this is one of my favorite triangles. And like many people…I found this triangle from loving the sweep and then completing the triangle as an organic combination. But what really tipped me into using this technique was when I saw Ryan Hall use this, not as a part of the sweep, but as a direct ‘attack’. It really is effective. It’s very high percentage submission and above all, it really is a lot of fun. Give this a try on the mat guys. And let me know how you go…

How To Tie Your Belt – The Right Way!

When we first start Jiu Jitsu one of the most daunting aspects can be ‘how to tie your belt’…and those that come from a traditional martial arts background find out pretty quick that their belt tying style doesn’t quite hold up to the intensity of grappling. The result – belts come off during a roll. This is no good…particularly if you are up against an opponent that likes to use the gi for gi wraps…that’s just handing them a weapon. Here is a great belt tie that I use. And I think you will love it. Watch it carefully and give it a go (if you don’t already).

A Simple But Awesome Armbar – From Guard!

This Armbar can often be used as a drill. It’s straight forward but massively effective. Like all the basics. Often when you are doing Jiu Jitsu – technical instruction can make a huge difference. Much of what I teach on this channel might fall into that category. However, sometimes the goal is to ‘get into’ that position. And that takes practice and drilling. A Simple But Unstoppable Forearm Choke

Collar Drag – Then Take The Back!

Where do you go from having your opponent in guard? well, the answer for a Jiu Jitsu practitioner is ‘almost anywhere’ – why? because this is one of the sports main positions. Where you go from guard and can define your ability in the sport. One of my favourite transitions is to move from guard into a back take. And guess what guys…it’s much easier than you think.
