In Catch Wrestling, they call this position the Sugar Hold, and it’s an absolutely amazing place to posture up and throw fight finishing strikes in an MMA fight.

But in the context of pure grappling it’s a great position, too because it opens up a whole new path of creativity.

Pay attention to the details here and make sure you get the placement of your hand correct as well as the footwork. Otherwise, you’re gonna struggle and do the whole “this move doesn’t work for me” thing. Nonsense. You just need a better understanding. As with most things.

Gotta be careful with this entry into the Honey Hole. There’s a lot of finesse involved, and even some of the greats of Jiu Jitsu have injured themselves in this position. It even happened to Gordon Ryan. Be safe here and enjoy those leg locks!

Using the Jean Jacques Butterfly Sweeps to open up the Meat Hook, which is a variation of the Rubber Guard that I use as one of my primary attacks from Butterfly Guard.

As always, the Triangle Choke should really be your #1 attack from all variations of Rubber Guard.

This is one of the craziest looking moves in my arsenal. It looks like a magic trick, but it’s actually ultra simple and easy to learn. Especially if you already have a great triangle and mounted triangle.

I picked it up off of Jean Jacques Machado when he was here back when I was but a lowly blue belt in 10th Planet. It took me years to understand it, but I think if you’ll give it a go you’ll pick it right up.

I’ve seen so many people struggle with triangles and even give up on them because they feel like their legs are too short to make it work. But really, it has very little to do with that. Look at my legs: short, kinda thick thick like Beyoncé. But the triangle is my most frequent and potent submission in my game.

It’s not leg length. It’s your technique.

So I really like teaching triangles, because it always turns on the light bulb for someone. Plus, I think the triangle is the most important submission in all of Jiu Jitsu.

This move will require some flexibility, but mostly it requires dexterity. Learning how to move your body and stay in your side with increase your Rubber Guard abilities dramatically.

Today we look at how to maintain back position once you have acquired it. We call this movement the Chair Sit. I believe I originally heard it called that on a Ryan hall video but honestly I can’t remember. Either way, it’s one of the most important movements in Jiu Jitsu and it has to be mastered. Also, a few quick words about connection, which is one of those mystical words in Grappling. But it really is the key to understanding what some of the great teachers like Rickson Gracie are referring to when they talk about Invisible Jiu Jitsu.
