Side note – if the partner grabs your waist well then it will be hard to do both versions. I asked my student to put his hand on me so it won’t look weird if it’d just lay around doing nothing, but the optimal time to roll is while he is pushing my shoulder down before he manages to secure a good grip on my hip.

Even the wrong version is better than getting tapped. But notice that I am finishing the roll on my back, because I roll forward, and all the momentum of the roll is stopped by the mat. If I try to get up, I do it with zero momentum. Most likely that my opponent will get up faster than me.
The correct version is harder, it’s not very natural to roll over the arm that isn’t trapped. But it is better because the circular roll gives me the spinning momentum I need to get up really fast, without stopping. This way, I am faster than my opponent and am able to recover the position faster.
