this match was the a semi finals of europeans. Rafa was strong for the featherweight division but his main attribute that set him apart from others was his knowledge in the situations his opponents would present to him.
notes for this match:
1.starting in the lasso guard he decided to keep the grip on the belt, make his opponent lose the foot on the biceps (spider guard control) and placed the free grip on the bottom of the pants.
2.using stacking pass as the next move forced his opponent to post his feet on the mat and release the lasso control.
3.instead of using big movements and trying to pass the guard right away Rafa used that sequence to move to a more dominant angle (ducking under the opponent’s leg)
4.notice how he is patient in the position and wait for his opponent to let go the sleeves so he can place his hands in a strong control grip to advance to the leg drag.
5.instead of jumping on the back or trying to get a hold of the head, Rafa smashed the hip down to secure a strong hold over the opponents body and started to work his grips in order to secure the side control once the legs were free.
6.also notice how important it is to be able to follow instructions and stay focused under pressure. as soon as I see the opportunity to place the head across the body to facilitate the sprawl I warn him and he immediately was able to execute the position.
esta luta foi a semifinal de um Europeu.
