#tbt • Many moons ago I was the defending state wrestling champion and ranked #2 nationally in my weight class. I was young, cocky and poised to walk through my division and become part of a very select group to have ever won 2 California state titles. For years to come I believe that this exchange in the semi-final match would define me and my legacy as a wrestler. Subsequent to this I felt a sort of hang-over that followed me around as my confidence was shook. In wrestling circles I was known as the “guy who lost that match” rather than for positive things I accomplished. Over time, I gained valuable perspective, and was able to use this loss as motivation to help propel me on and off the mat when things got tough. Interesting looking back to think that such a short flurry of movements can have such a big impact on the psyche of a young athlete. Looking back, I smile while watching this and am kind of amazed at the fact that I cared so much to let a loss or a win define me. Good times striving for greatness and as my old coach used to say, “the glory is in the journey, not the destination”.
