Mahalo to @mikeonzuka, @toddtanakadotcom, @tpjj_allday & Chris for talking story! Made me a little less homesick to chop it up with Kama’āina. 🙏🏽🤙🏽
One of the many things we chatted about was the amount of misinformation there is related to police work, including but not limited to tactics, techniques and equipment. The vascular neck restraint is one of the many things that has been removed from law enforcement as a less lethal force option due to misinformation and public perception instead of science and data. At the end of the day, we still work for our community so if they don’t want a certain tactic or technique performed, we won’t do it. However, the irony of removing less lethal force options like the VNR is that it actually increases the likelihood of injuries occurring to both the officer and the arrestee.
As a profession we need to do a better job of proactively educating our communities about what we do and why, so that people have accurate information to make informed decisions. We need to take more ownership of that because if we don’t do it, no one else will.
