Kinstretch for Jiu Jitsu: Hips for Guard Retention
•••••••••••••••••••••••
To have an effective guard you need a guard that cannot be passed. What physical qualities are required?
.
Hip flexion mobility.
.
Hip flexion is the ability to you to bring your knees towards your chest. The less space between ribs and thigh the harder it will be for someone to pass your guard.
.
Hip flexion is a linear movement. How do you address linear deficits? You want to have a hip capsule with a larger capacity to move. This is referred to as having adequate capsular workspace.
.
The key to increasing hip joint capsule workspace is through Rotation.
.
Addressing hip rotation deficiencies to improve linear deficits. Why? Rotation in general the key to addressing a capsule limitation. Rotation will help all hip movements associated with the hip.
.
Rotational mobility will be essential when dealing with a pressure passer so you can have the strength at odd ankles to defend the pass.
.
Are your hips limiting your ability to retain your guard?
