I feel like askren is right and wrong. I forget positions I've learned all the time. I remember the obvious ones, but blank if its anything where I could escape/submit, but have forgotten. So I started a journal for the move's we learn in class. As soon as I get done with training, I write down what positions we've covered. It definitely helps. But at the same time, I feel like class could be quite boring if you just went over 1 position for the entire class period. But, you would have a great understanding of this position, and be more confident when put to the test should that position arise!

Matthew Van Helden says
Is it really that bad at other schools? We drill for like at least an hour and then just roll until we're done pretty much.
Kevin Van Gorp says
I'm glad someone says it. So many schools: "alright, two times a week I'll show you a combined 20 mins of technique, then you guys can use my mats to roll around and give me $170 for the month". Nah. It's called muscle memory. Run drills 101 times, make it stick. Let the brain know the routes. Then at the end of the week if everyone wants to try their new tricks, alright have some fun with it. Sell the knowledge and the technique, not your mat real-estate.

Ben doesn't seem to understand that BJJ is not an academic sport. Everyone can train BJJ, not just those who make the team, and build competitive dreams around their participation. Forcing that level of drilling on your average BJJ student would be total overkill. However, many schools have competition teams that do drill for competition.

Respect the art Rogan, not everything revolves around 10th planet! real jitz is from Brazil OSS

Drilling is fine. But muscle memory is built in jiu jitsu rolling everyday. That's where is innovation comes from. There is nothing wrong with jiu jitsu! You can't decide you want to change jiu jitsu based on wrestling approach and what wrestlers do. . Also jiu jitsu is fun, rolling is the best exercise where you feel that euphoria and leave all your problems on the mat rolling hard with your opponents round after round. It caters to everyone. I don't think any school would stay open drilling every class and only once a week rolling. Nobody would stay. That's why there's jiu jitsu schools everywhere for the average joe, with a job and family, housewife to high end athletes and competitors …and very few wrestling schools.
Andrew Martinez says
I agree with Akren, but how many moves does wrestling have compared to JJ and how often is wrestling evolving? Jiu Jitsu is continuously evolving and will continue to do so. So I agree people need to drill more, but they can also do that on their own time. For most people when they pay for classes it’s a limited amount of time and they want to learn as much as possible. I completely
understand.

Judo practice at white belt is more like one new throw each practice. Ten from the right, ten from the left. Ten from the right, ten from the left. Again. Again. Again. By the time randori rolls around, you've done that throw 100 times (50 times each side) and you've made it part of your toolkit.
unlimitedwealth1 says
The lack of drill is deliberately keeping students dumb so they'll keep coming for more, ,,in other words they're scamming the students
