Randall Prince says
Train escapes. And more positional awareness. This match went on for so long because the other guy didn’t know how to finish any of these submissions very well. Way to fight and push through, but had he been any better it would have been over with the triangle.
David Lethaby says
When you’re in guard constantly strip grips and regain your posture. It’s boring as hell but prevention is better than cure
Kaleb Watts says
Couple things I see. 1) When in a partners closed guard try to keep your shoulders square with their shoulders, you do not want to be leaning to either side or you are off balance. 2) My favorite triangle defense is to get a knee, or both under my opponents butt, it makes it very hard for them to break my posture, as long as I can keep the hands out of my collar or off of my head.
3) Get into the habit of controlling the far leg when playing 1 leg X guard, it offers vastly superior control over an opponents base. Also when in the spot do not fold up. You want a straight line from your chin to your hips, if you let them base forward and bring your knees onto your chest you will get passed on.
Kaleb Watts says
And obviously keep working on grip fighting, make the first grips so your opponent can’t, but I’m sure these are things everyone tells you, I know I heard them a lot a year in as well. You need to get your game going first, and to do that you need grips.
Kaleb Watts says
Oh, also when shooting on that double, make sure you and windshield wipering your feet to a 90 degree angle before driving through, that will give you a much better chance of passing the legs by and avoiding a triangle
Eric P. Schwalm says
I saw a numbers game in that match. Mike sent more submission attempts from every angle at you then you sent against him. You seemed very determined to go for leg/ankle submission and he had answers for every attempt. You also had answers for many of his submission attempts but he was constantly attacking from everywhere. When the fight is like that the victory usually goes to the one with more attacks in sub only fights. It was an excellent demonstration of skill by both of you. My recommendation is to increase your attack speed and add more/different submissions. Good luck!
Tyler Lathrop says
When he has you in that triangle, lock your hands together under his leg and sort of roll him over and break that grip.
Marshall White says
Remember to get that arm over when you got him in a triangle. You also could have choked him from the omoplota position.
Vasco Leal says
Props on the resilience.
I think you need to work on that double leg. Your posture was off, you need to bend the knees and have a straight back.
If your double leg would get better, I don’t think you’d ever start off like this again. With the GI it’s not as easy to double leg like the usual wrestling double leg.

P.S. He locked the 1st triangle on the wrong side, I’ve never got into that situation but I think it’s hard to finish it with the legs on the wrong side. Right?
