Ground Self-Defense Essentials | Defending Strikes and Setting up a Sweep

Knowing how to defend strikes while on the ground is the most important skillset you must develop in your groundwork.

This means it should be trained as often as possible.

We covered some Fundamentals in how to defend strikes while on the ground in a previous video (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WhBXIJZ-jwI&t=1s).

These are just introductions and not deep dives into these techniques.

However, these are essential skills.
If you cannot effectively defend strikes while on the ground then your groundwork is basically useless for protecting yourself.

The paradox is that in order to protect myself from damage, it often makes it more difficult to set up sweeps and submissions while doing so. That’s because I need space to submit him or sweep him.
But, space is also what he wants in order to powerfully hit me.

So, people don’t understand how to do both.

In essence, one way I can do it is in transition as he begins to try to make space. Crucially, I fill the space as he does until I have the opportunity to attack.

In this situation, my opponent tries to get to his feet to pull free and attack. But, he then gives me the opportunity to attack the Tripod Sweep.
