Gary Berger – Straight Armbar Basics from Top Mount

Gary Berger - Straight Armbar Basics from Top Mount

Hey guys were going to do a what basic top mount armbar which is one of the first things you typically learn in Jiu-Jitsu.  It goes something like this. I’ve got a top mount and my opponent has some skills. He’s not going to just throw his arms into the sky and let me armbar him. He’s not just going to give me an armbar for free. So this is how I’m going to set it up. I put in my left hand and threatened him with a choke. So a lot of times my opponent tries to stop my choke  And what I’m looking for is his left elbow lifting up giving me a little bit of space to trap that elbow. That’s the beginning. I use my sternum to trap his elbow and then I turn the corner further trapping his left arm.

[00:01:10] Now I have a strong base. He’s not going to roll me or move me. Notice my left foot by his hip. That’s important to help control him. Now I’m ready to start setting up my armbar. So I’m going to lift his right elbow up with my right arm and throw my left foot under his shoulder as far as I can.

[00:01:37] Once I get that I lean onto my my left side where I am almost walking a tight rope. Look how my right leg is light and free. If I go too far I’m going to fall on my face. So it takes some practice and you have to learn where your balance is. So now my right leg comes around his head. Now I’m just gonna fall back. Note this little detail for securing the arm better when your opponents arms look like this.

[00:02:14] Notice how my right hand is on his elbow. This helps kill his other arm and prevent it from helping him grab his arm that’s in danger. Now its a simple matter of going backwards and converging to the armbar. This is a little trick I use to keep him arm in the best orientation that I call “The Hey Man!”. you dont even need to see the move. You just need to feel it. Keep your knees tight and lift your hips to get the armbar.

[00:03:11] A few other details include keeping the pinky finger of your opponent down and his thumb up. Wherever the piny finger it thats the direction you need to pull. So pull towards the opponent’s pinky.
