Every now and then, we like to highlight great throws by today’s top Judoka; we can all learn from the constant refining of techniques these athletes put into their craft to stay at the top levels of the sport. This past weekend, the Baku Grand Slam took place, and the tournament had a ton of amazing throws for us all to watch on www.ippon.tv
#
Today’s highlight is an awesome ashi-waza by rising star Denis Vieru – look at the commitment to the turn and drop!
#
As Shikhalizade steps in for what looks to be a koshi-waza of some kind, Vieru takes advantage of the created momentum and his gripping setup (mid-back and lapel grips) to launch a massive sutemi-style Sasae-Tsurikomi-Ashi. What’s key here is the LARGE step Vieru takes with his left foot (the foot that will stay on the mat as he executes the throw). This large step creates – or increases, depending on the situation – the necessary amount of torque needed for this turning-style Sasae.

Come learn techniques like this and many more Mon/Wed/Fri nights 7-9pm at Kokushi Budo Institute (331 Riverside Dr., New York, NY 10025).
