Earlier this month at work we covered #weaponretention. An unholstered #firearm in close quarters can be a huge liability. It gets even sketchier when the fight is grounded.
The intuitive goal of getting up is generally a good thing. However, it can also create back exposure and the opportunity for someone to get behind you, which is something that is generally very bad.
Even though my coworker Officer Jackson is significantly taller and heavier, once grounded he was very vulnerable to being disarmed or knocked out.
I think it is important to note that in spite of the huge size difference against me, and the fact that I am unarmed, Ofc Jackson would be able to reasonably articulate shooting me in this situation. Presuming that was true, where would the shots go? Even if a handgun round mortally wounds me, I will probably not die until several seconds later, which means you have to keep fighting.
It should also be noted that even though we are very close to each other, trying to aim and shoot at the arms or legs of a person who is trying to kill or disarm you as a way of stopping them is totally unrealistic.
Another takeaway for me is that while I was in the backmount, my attempts to reach for the pistol caused me to lose the position I had as you cannot use your arms to control and disarm simultaneously. If I were to end up in a position like this against someone who is armed, wrapping the neck would appear to be the fastest way to end the fight.
As always, everything works, and everything fails. Better to know in training than to find out when itβs real. Weβre really lucky to have guys like Ofc Jackson who are willing to get after it on our team. ππ½π₯πΊπΈππ€π½
