Chewjitsu is one of the coolest guys in BJJ and I love hanging out and training with him.
He was in Decatur a few weeks ago for the PGF Finale and we took the opportunity to get some content put together.
This was a 2 parter, so if you wanna see the second part head over to Chewy’s channel and check it out here:

Top side no-gi baseball choke instructional video.
.
One of the key elements of the submission game, and in battles in general, is distractions. If you want to choke – attack the arm. If you want to conquer the north – attack from the east.
If you attack in a linear way, it is very easy to defend one attack. But when you chain attacks and attack from multiple directions – it gets very hard to defend everything at once.
.
The baseball choke is kind of a nasty choke. You get inside it fast and it almost crashes the neck upon entry, even before the actual pressure. It is very surprising and if you get caught with it, you’ll probably go home with a sore throat. It has a bad name – but it is important to know.
.
In the end position, you can move to a sort of Kesa Gatame position to increase the pressure. A lot of instructors teach like that. I personally don’t like it, because if the person is tough, he can endure the pain long enough to get up and reverse the position (because you don’t have a base at the back and you lean backwards). Especially as a small guy that is easier to sweep.
.
Have fun with it and keep your partners safe!

The layers of guard is a crucial concept. We refilmed it and it’s on the site now.

never too young to start.
this is a short video of me teaching my son Ace some skills that will help him not only in Jiu Jitsu but in anything he decides to pursue in life. When teaching its important that we set the right expectations based on each student background and age, after you start and develop a good system it becomes a matter of work and consistence for you to improve. Ace is 2.5 years old and has been training at AOJ for a couple of months, at this age teaching Jiu Jitsu techniques is not the goal. To me its more important that he learns to follow commands, develop good communication skills so he can tell his training partners and coaches whenever something is bothering him, learn to respect people around him so he can grow up in a good environment and improve his body coordination and balance, so he can eventually learn the jiu jitsu techniques.

Man tries to rob a woman in Brazil with a large knife and a fake gun. Little does he know, she was right in front of her son’s jiu-jitsu school. As the crowd gathered (no one did anything) she screamed the name of the BJJ instructor (black belt) who came running down with his peers, tackled the guy, took the knife and held him in a rear naked choke and wrist lock until the cops arrived.
_
The black belt later released a video explaining the situation and made it very clear that one should always surrender physical possessions when being robbed and that his choice to intervene, although instinctive based on his years of training and capabilities, was irresponsible and would not be recommended for anyone. I commend him for his bravery, but I respect him deeply for his clarification message after the fact.
