Yesterday, I encouraged people (especially those with BJJ experience) to intervene to help police officers in need of help. After speaking to several officers and getting their feedback we came up with some basic guidelines that should be considered before lending a helping hand:
1. ASSESS the threat to the officer and to yourself. Is your help really needed? Is it even safe for you to intervene?
2. ASK permission to help and identify yourself to the officer. An officer has no way of knowing which team you’re on, so let them know you’re there to help and wait for explicit permission to enter.
3. ACKNOWLEDGE the risks of intervention. There are safety risks and there are legal risks. Each jurisdiction has different laws regarding civilian intervention so make sure you know yours.

Guard Retention is the most important skill set in jiu jitsu. No matter what techniques you like to use, sometimes you will make mistakes and guard retention is the key to getting a second chance, this video I go through what I have commonly seen as the most frequent mistakes by student when defending the guard.

This is a way more comprehensive guide to kesa gatame, or scarf hold, than I’ve ever put out. I’ve been looking back at some videos I’ve done in the past, and seeing how I can improve upon them, and this was one that I really wanted to tackle. Kesa, in all its various forms, offers so many opportunities for control and submission, and hopefully this video gets that point across. Hope you guys like it!

Competing used to be very difficult for me. I would get tremendous anxiety if someone even watched me train, let alone compete in front of so many people! Being an introvert, it was extremely difficult. In 2018 and 2019, I only did very few competitions because I hated competing so much. This was a huge struggle for me. But how I am as a person, whenever I struggle with something, I push myself to do it more and more. I do it until it’s no longer a struggle for me and achieve homeostasis! I believe whenever I feel that anxious feeling, I must challenge it and conquer it. So, what did I do? I forced myself to compete every month since March to challenge that feeling. Has it been hard? Yes. It’s has been very difficult physically and mentally doing this every month. But the technical progress I’ve made doing this, enabled me to progress years’ worth in 5 months. I still have so much to improve and to work on (besides competing, even talking in interviews 😭🤣) but I feel like I’m making progress and I’ve been doing the best I can. If you are having a hard time competing due to anxiety and you need someone to talk to about it, please msg me! If I can do it, u can also. ❤😊
