A mount escape from No Gi Pin Escapes https://www.grapplearts.com/no-gi-pin-escapes/. This old-school move was popular among the MMA fighters back in the early 2000s and still works amazingly well if your opponent has his weight over the top of you, and if he doesn’t have his legs grapevined or crossed under your hips.
If you do this escape properly then you DON’T need huge triceps and an amazing bench press. The key is to generate momentum with your hips and only take up the load with your arms once they are almost straight. Once he’s suspended above you there are multiple ways you can finish the technique, including establishing a recumbent butterfly guard, sweeping him with the Single Leg X Guard, and attacking the legs starting with the Standard Ashi entanglement.
If you develop this escape, then it will make learning and mastering the full kipping escape (which DOES work when your opponent crosses his ankles under your butt) much easier.

Recently I posted a video talking about the “let’s go light guy” in Jiu-Jitsu gyms.
Watch it here: https://youtu.be/xKBWrwA2Cdg
Everyone, if you train in Jiu-Jitsu, will have the “let’s go light” conversation that leads into a World Championship level roll (as far as intensity).
This can be extremely frustrating.
Many of you guys commented on that previously mentioned video, saying that you have had the experience. But some of you commented that you are the person who actually does ask the question, however they actually keep their word.
So, how do you approach actually rolling light, after asking the question? and how can rolling light be an effective tool to help you get better faster and help you heal in the midst of an injury caused by BJJ?
I’ll talk about this and more in the video.
Thanks for watching.

What’s up guys,
I’ve got a question from one of my Jiu-Jitsu email list Chew crew Subscribers named Matt who asked:
He was curious about catching and almost releasing when applying submissions and developing positions.
Catch & Almost Release is a concept I use to help level up my own chain submission attacks in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, and one that I have my students work too.
Matt was curious if I could give some specific examples to help clarify the point, so that’s what I’ll do.
If you train BJJ then you will probably find this idea helpful.
Thanks for watching.

So, today, we’ve got a question from Matt, a 4-stripe white belt and a big boy who says he prefers pressure passing.
He says he’s experiencing an obstacle though.
According to his coaches, he’s not using as much pressure as he could, and the main reason is that he’s worried about hurting his training partners.
He doesn’t use pressure, explosiveness, or dynamic movements because he’s the big guy in the room. He’s worried this makes him overly defensive, passive, and soft.
He asked what the best way was to change his thinking about going hard, upping the intensity, and lowering the injury risk while training Jiu-Jitsu as a bigger person.
I’ll give you guys a couple ideas to chew on when in relation to being a big guy doing Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu in a room full of smaller training partners.
Hopefully, you find them helpful.
Thanks for watching.

What do you call this choke? I tend to call it a variation of either single wing, kata ha jime, the cobra clutch or the million dollar dream…depends if I’m feeling more jiu-jitsu-y or pro-wrestling at the time. Either way, it’s included in my recent video of 7 Powerful Chokes from Mount (No Gi Edition) on my YouTube channel.
