The Under Hook Escape is a must know stand up for any martial artist. For MMA, half guard can be a strong top position to work from, which makes escaping important. Using the power of the under hook, you can work your way up to your feet and often times come up with a better position or a well timed exit strike.
One of the key things to keep yourself out of danger is to make sure that you can keep your head safe by either staying under his chin or on his temple.

There are two key tactics that are core to my game in this short clip.
First, is that when I am on top I give my opponent two choices: stay on their back and essentially pin themselves or get on their side in order to try to escape and give me the Guillotine.
I’m happy to let them get stuck in this dilemma.
The next core concept is “the threat of a thing is as almost as good as the thing itself.”
The sweep I do here looks like no one should fall for it but I’ve caught white to black with it many times. Because I am always threatening the guillotine, many will compromise their posture up and away from me which gives me all my forward sweeps.
You can see a longer breakdown of all the times I use this 1-2 punch in this breakdown video: https://youtu.be/uOqwrrI0xTM

Today’s video is set of 7 Butterfly Guard sweeps we’ve been drilling in my Brazilian Jiu-jitsu classes (as of the time of posting this).
They’re very basic techniques. But I’ve found if you combine them together seamlessly, they’re difficult to stop. There are variations of how each move is used but these are some of mine. Hopefully they’re helpful to you with your BJJ training and drilling ideas.
In the video you’ll see . . .
– Over Under Sweep
– Double Overhook Sweep
– Coming Up To 1 Knee to Force the Person To Engage
– Failes Over Under to Double Over
– Coming Up for an Ankle Pick
– Armdrag to Back Mount
– Using a Straight Armlock as a Sweep
Thanks for watching the video!

I have grown to love the reverse seat belt position. Most people are not familiar with it, and it is a very scramble orientated position. So people with more experience in this position will dominate the scrambles, and since this is an unorthodox position, you can usually win these scrambles with ease. I also like this position because your opponent cannot punch or elbow you effectively, and he doesn’t have access to submissions because his arms are not able to reach you.
For today’s technique, we going over the most common way of using the reverse seat belt, which is to take the back. It just requires a simple butt scoot and hip shift, and you will have a single leg ride locked up, giving you a path to the back or even the truck.

When your opponent defends well and pushes your head on the arm/leg weave pass, you have to switch quickly to prevent the guard retention. Here is one of my favorite options. Always choose the path of least resistance.
