You shouldn’t let someone roll out of your kimura attempt, but if they do, the trap can still get you to the back. This is one example of how.

I have short, thick legs, so triangle chokes are not a strong point in my game. But I do love the side triangle!
It is very simple to setup from the TV position, and once you have it locked up, it is very difficult to escape. I like to think of it like a front headlock, but using your legs instead of your arms. Plus, you have the Kimura controlling his other arm, so your opponent his no hands free to defend themselves with, and their legs are too far away to help.
We can finish the choke, a modified Kimura, or a wrist lock from the side triangle. Or, we can get to top position, which allows us to attack the choke, the Kimura, the figure four arm lock, or the spear of destiny, a viscous fist choke.

This video I overview the key aspects of a strong side control. I focus primarily on the key principle of using your chest weight to pin your opponents shoulders to the mat. Not only does this have a huge effect in side control but in all pinning positions in general strong chest pressure is so powerful.

In today’s BJJ technique video I share some useful triangle choke finishing details. It certainly isn’t all of them but it’s some basics to get you going if you’re having trouble finishing your triangle. If you get all of these tips down, I’d be surprised if you don’t finish your triangle choke with a higher percentage.
The triangle is one of the strongest submissions in Brazilian Jiu-jitsu when done right. And these tips come from my own experience and that of my students who have very good triangles.
And even if you’re not super long and can’t lock your legs deep for the triangle. I’ll give you an adjustment to finishing the triangle with slightly shorter legs.
Anyways, good luck with using the details and happy hunting for your next triangle choke.
