This past Sunday, the grappling world had one of the biggest matches of the year, Gordon Ryan vs Felipe Pena 3. The much anticipated trilogy was a no time limit, submission only match. Despite going 44 minutes, the match had a good amount of action sequences and teachable moments. On this video, I’m covering the effective sweeps that Gordon used from his bottom half guard.

Both sweeps were initiated from the same error that Felipe made, sitting to his hip facing Gordon’s hips – without controlling Gordon’s top arm. This allowed Gordon to get his arm behind Felipe, and execute both sweeps – the hip bump to the back and the Overwrap leg trap.

This past weekend, we had the devastating news that 8x World Champion Leandro Lo had passed away. He was brutally murdered in São Paulo, SP, Brazil. After the 2022 IBJJF World Championship, Leandro was here at Atos Jiu-Jitsu HQ, teaching a seminar and giving an interview to Professor Andre Galvao in “GalvaoCast”. We are honored to have had Leandro here, we never imagined it would be the last time.

In today’s video I share some ideas on how I do belt promotions at my BJJ gym. To illustrate the answer for the person asking the question I share a story about 2 college wrestlers who trained at my gym. 1 got his Blue Belt while the other didn’t. There’s a lot of factors that led to this. But 1 in particular was the reason for withholding the promotion from 1 and then giving it to the other.

Keep in mind, at the time, both people were able to hang with a Black Belt in top positions.
