In this video, I go over in my opinion, one of the biggest holes in people’s guard passing games that I think you need to fix. The stack pass is a very uncommon pass that is underutilised by many guard passers but can be very effective against flexible guard players and also has some high percentage back takes from the position.

For MMA, playing guard is not always the best or safest strategy. It’s easy to end up stuck in your guard and getting ground and pounded. For this reason, I like using the over hook guard, especially in MMA.
From the over hook, it is difficult for your opponent to strike – even head butts are off the table. It’s also perhaps the best striking position for the guard player, as they have easy access to elbows to the head.
However, there are a lot of great attacks from the over hook guard, especially when the opponent is trying to strike. Key among them is the triangle choke.

If you would like to improve your guard passing, there are two things that will help you. The first is to play with resistance in the positions that you want to pass. And the second is to choose an opening gambit that can be used to funnel their responses into a pattern that you can start capitalizing on.
The idea of an opening gambit is also something that you can apply broadly to other aspects of the game that you want to improve at. So try on the bottom of the guard as well.
