What if you have short stubby legs like me, and have a hard time making triangle chokes work? Trust me, I feel your pain. I’m 5’9″, but have the torso of a 6’+ man, which is why in my podcast I even appear taller than Robert Drysdale (who is 6’3″). So I get it.
I can get “diamonds” instead of “triangles” pretty easily, and learned a nifty trick to take advantage of the position. I call this the triangle sweep, and it can be used whenever you have a triangle or a diamond. What’s great is that it will land you right into the mount, where you can choose to bail and stick the mount, or reset your triangle and get really tight.

A pin from the bottom guard? Yes. This Triangle pin is quite devious, and once locked in creates a huge problem for the top person. If they stay put, they will get elbowed to oblivion. If they pull out, the get triangle choked. And if they push in, they get short arm barred.

In this video, I go over in my opinion, one of the biggest holes in people’s guard passing games that I think you need to fix. The stack pass is a very uncommon pass that is underutilised by many guard passers but can be very effective against flexible guard players and also has some high percentage back takes from the position.
