In this double-leg takedown defense, Ryan Cafaro teaches how to seamlessly transition into a guillotine choke. In MMA & street fights, the “tackle” or double-leg is a common technique, and this defense is an effective option to finishing the fight.

Ben’s fascination for Jiu-Jitsu, like most others in his generation, began when he first watched Royce Gracie in the first Ultimate Fighting Championships. After graduating college in 1997 he officially began his Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu journey and even had the chance to once train with Royce in 1999. Ben even had the privilege of consistently training with UFC Hall of Famer Dan “The Beast” Severn as they only lived 45 minutes apart. His fascination and relentless passion for learning lead to Ben meeting and establishing a longtime friendship and mentorship with BJJ Legends and multiple time World Champions, Saulo and Xande Ribeiro. This relationship led Ben to becoming a Ribeiro Jiu-Jitsu Association instructor in 2006.
On 10/10/2009, after years of dedication, hard training; often driving hours to train with the Ribeiro brothers in their Toledo and Detroit academies on a weekly basis, Ben had the honor of becoming the 6th American to be promoted to the rank of Black Belt by Saulo.
Professor Ben Eaton is not only the head instructor of JJI, but he also has the privilege of being the East Coast Director of the Ribeiro Jiu-Jitsu Association.

I was recently asked by John D, When will I know I’m ready to compete in BJJ?
This is such a common question I get from my newer students who haven’t competed in wrestling or other 1on1 sports.
The people that get into Brazilian Jiu Jitsu that have competed in other 1on1 sports know that a part of it is simply doing it. You’re not going to know you’re ready. But you just do it anyways.
This is especially true for your first competition. You won’t know you’re ready for something you haven’t done yet. So it’s only natural that you’re going to second guess yourself and wonder when you’ll feel ready.
So for your 1st BJJ tournament you’re not going to know you’re ready. You just have to get out there and do it.
If you’re one of those people who is a little more anxious or an over thinker. Like me. Then something you can do is make a simple game plan outlining at least one move from every major position. Making sure you have at least 1 takedown, 1 guard pull, escape from every position, a sweep series, submission series.
In essence you want to make sure you know exactly how you will approach the match from start to finish.
You don’t want to start the match and wonder, “what do I do now?”
So there are a couple of tips.
Hope the video was helpful!

Professor Gustavo Gasperin and Dr. Mike Piekarski, DPT break down the kinematics of the Toehold submission.
This is video #2 of a video series explaining anatomically how leg lock submissions work.
“A toe hold submission attacks the ankle right, but how does it work? There are multiple joints working at the ankle complex, particularly the talocrural joint and the subtalar joint.
The talocrural joint allows the foot to lift up and push down (dorsiflexion and plantarflexion). This is the joint that is primarily targeted by an ankle lock.
The subtalar joint allows the foot to fold in and out (inversion and eversion). The toe hold submission targets both joints (talocrural and subtalar) simultaneously by folding the foot down and in (Combining plantarflexion and inversion). There are two ligaments that prevent this movement: anterior talofibular ligament and calcaneofibular ligament.
These are the same ligaments that are damaged from a typical rolled ankle (ankle sprain). Stay tuned for my next post differentiating a traditional ankle lock from an achilles compression.”
