Arm triangle (Kata Gatame) setup from back control + sneaky variation.
.
Normally, we won’t choose to go the arm triangle from the back control. The back control, arguably, is the best position, so why move the a less dominant position to try to land a submission? You have plenty of submissions to try without compromising your position.
But, as all things in life, BJJ isn’t black and white. Sometimes I am struggling to get a good submission from the back and I feel limited, so I try a different approach. Sometimes, he is about to slip away and I can sneak in an arm triangle if I have the right grip. And sometimes you just want to impress the ladies with a slick move.
.
I change my “right” seatbelt grip to the “wrong” one so I could get help from the other arm (choking arm) to pull the bottom arm (control arm). I keep my head close to his, so he won’t be able to swing his arm over my head and undo my arm triangle. I release the hook and get to side control.
I didn’t give any details for a tight arm triangle, I only focused on the setup.
.
The other variation is harder. It’s sneaky, you don’t lose position, but you’d better have long arms for this technique. It’s hard with short arms. It’s not a high percentage submission too, because proper arm positioning by the opponent would prevent this completely. BUT, sometimes people make mistakes, especially when you try to submit them, so you don’t know when you could surprise someone with this nice trick.
p.s most of the times, your opponent would tap from the nasty pain, before the choke. If you want to practice the proper choke and not causing your partner any pain, you should try to place your forearm directly on his arteries, next to the trachea. AND you should pull your elbow towards you, instead of squeezing your forearm and wrist to yourself (inflicting more pain than choke).
